In creating a club soccer team at NYU our goal was to facilitate the development of a competitive atmosphere and a sense of community for women-identifying/ non-binary soccer players on campus. Before 2022, NYU offered two outlets of participation for women who are interested in playing soccer within the university’s grounds: varsity and intramural. Given the stark difference in commitment and competition between these options, many students have had difficulty finding a group with which they can enjoy this internationally-loved sport, while still prioritizing academics and other interests. Thus, club soccer at NYU serves as the perfect outlet for students across campus to play soccer at a competitive level, with a reasonable time commitment. 

       Most importantly, the goal of establishing a club soccer team at NYU was to foster an environment of mutual support and community, with the focus of promoting diversity and inclusion. We wanted to create a team of like minded and equally committed and determined individuals who are willing to put in the slight time and physical commitment to both create and share this wonderful college club sport experience with each other to its full potential. With NYU’s lack of a structured campus making it difficult to meet people and form communities, our facilitation of social events helps students not only build a network of teammates, but also new long-lasting friendships, and create a safe space for students from a variety of backgrounds. Our formation of a Club soccer team at NYU allows students from different areas of study and various backgrounds to share their love for the beautiful game.
