All students who support our mission, desire to make a difference in the APUG community, and meet our minimum eligibility requirements are encouraged to apply!
Our recruitment and selection process runs from Mid-March to Late April. We recruit students who can commit to serving as an IS! mentor for both the Fall and the Spring semesters in the upcoming academic year.

🎓 What are previous IS! Mentors saying?

APUG students join IS! for a variety of reasons. Some students are hoping to give back to their academic community, some hope to practice foundational motivational interviewing and 1:1 facitliation skills, some hope to lead creative and meaningful events that help new students explore their career and academic interests. We've highlighted a few reflections from our alumni below:

Caroline Alvarado | Class of 2026

Why did you join IS!? NYU is very big and this can be overwhelming for new students. I wanted to help new students find their way around APUG by providing them with tips, advice, kindness and wisdom from my experiences!
How does your experience in IS! align with your post-grad plans? Serving as an IS! Mentor was a great way for me to put some of the foundational communication skills, - and even some of the beginning counseling techniques learned in class - into practice. This experience helped me refine the "soft skills" needed for my life after college! I'm hoping to gain more direct clinical/patient care experience at my local hospital/rehab center. I plan to pursue a career as a Nurse!

Vivian Wang | Class of 2026

Why did you join IS!? When I was an incoming new student, I felt uneasy as a suburban girl who had never visited NYU or NYC before. My IS! mentor was very welcoming, and it calmed my nerves knowing that there were fellow students I could look to for guidance and support, so I want to recreate that same comfort for incoming students!
How does your experience in IS! align with your post-grad plans? Through IS! I've been able to develop stronger event planning and other administrative skills. In part due to the support provided by the club leadership. This summer, I'm working at Johnson & Johnson as a Global Medical Affairs Intern, and starting this fall, I’ll be attending Columbia University to pursue a Master's in Public Health!

Rachel Fang | Class of 2026

Why did you join IS!? I love meeting new people and wanted to be a friendly guide for incoming students. I thought it would be a fun way to spend Senior Year and would help new students feel at home right away!
How does your experience in IS! align with your post-grad plans? This Fall, I’ll be continuing my studies at Harvard Graduate School of Education in the Learning Design, Innovation, and Technology program! I’m excited to further explore how technology, psychology, and education can come together to support children’s learning and development.
Being an IS! Mentor helped me practice guiding younger peers through vulnerable times in their life. As I work with children I'm sure nuanced situations will arise where it'll be necessary to tactfully rely on mentoring skills to connect children with appropriate resources.
