Our team's idea was to create a table that encourages people to gather around it and put their phones side by side to promote social interaction. By placing our phones on the table, this idea fosters connectedness and gives users a shared experience. When everyone puts their phones on the table, the table remains united and intact, signifying participation and unity. To serve as a reminder of the value of being totally present and involved in the moment with one another, the table would break if anyone took out their phone. The goal of this design is to create a setting that improves in-person interactions and strengthens bonds amongst guests.
Our goal when designing this table was to remove all technology and other distractions and to promote genuine conversations. We wanted to create an environment where individuals are inspired to interact with one another authentically to develop stronger bonds over meals. We wanted to inspire connection by restricting those of using their phones during dinner.
Our table encourages users to be present and focus on those around them. We want to build meaningful conversations and real-life connections. Our ultimate goal was to restore the warmth and depth of in-person interactions, strengthening the sense of community that is so essential to human connection.
Grabbing all of our supplies. Made our model out of cardboard, hot glue, and string.
Cutting out the table. Cut it c into quarters.
Cut out the phones plus their Magsafe connectors that would be attached to the table.
Connected the phones with string to the table for our demonstration.
Group Evaluation:
During our project, I unfortunately fell ill with a fever, but my group stepped up and supported me by starting the planning process while I was recovering. They took the initiative and began the table design, showcasing true teamwork and collaboration. Once I was able to return to class, I made sure to show up and help turn this idea into reality.
As we prepared to present, we all worked together to develop an idea to showcase our idea to the class. We decided we would present the table as if we were sitting at the table while having a lively conversation in order to set up an engaging presentation. We hoped to keep our audience engaged while showcasing what our table could do. Our goal was to convey the essential ideas of social engagement and to stay connected at the dinner table. Throughout this project, themes of teamwork, adaptability, cooperation, and flexibility were all showcased.
