A sabbatical leave is defined as a leave for the purpose of encouraging faculty members to engage in scholarly research or other activities that will increase their scholarly achievement or their capacity for service to the University.
Below are general guidelines for full-time faculty. For a full description of sabbatical leave and university policies, please see the faculty handbook.
During the fall semester, the dean’s office will notify faculty if they are eligible for a sabbatical (either at full salary or 3/4 salary) in the fall or spring semester of the next academic year. If a faculty member thinks they are eligible for a sabbatical, but they have not been contacted by the Dean’s Office, the faculty member should contact the dean’s office as soon as possible to confirm eligibility.
Assistant Professor
Clinical Assistant Professor
Faculty in the above ranks are eligible for sabbatical as follows:
Assistant professors are eligible for sabbatical after successful promotion at the end of the sixth year to associate professor and after completing six years of full-time service. (Please note that personal leaves do not count toward full-time service.)
Clinical assistant professors are eligible for sabbatical after successful promotion to clinical associate professor and after completing six years of full-time service. (Please note that personal leaves do not count toward full-time service.)
There are two sabbatical options that assistant professors and clinical assistant professors may take after successful promotion to Associate Professor or Clinical Associate Professor and after completing six years of full-time service:
One semester at 100% salary, OR
Two semesters at ¾ salary (please note faculty receive 3/4 salary for an entire calendar year)
Many assistant professors and clinical assistant professors seek external funding so that they can supplement their salary in order to have a full year of leave at full pay.

Faculty in the above ranks are eligible for sabbatical as follows:
After 6 SEMESTERS of full-time service (please note that personal leaves do not count toward full-time service), they may take one semester at ¾ salary (please note faculty receive 3/4 salary for six months*), OR
After 6 YEARS of full-time service (please note that personal leaves do not count toward full-time service), they may take:
One semester at 100% salary, OR
Two semesters at ¾ salary (please note faculty receive 3/4 salary for an entire calendar year)
Faculty with Prior Service at Another Institution
Faculty who have accumulated time on their sabbatical clock from another institution can have their prior service evaluated to determine if they are eligible to count the prior service toward their NYU sabbatical eligibility.
Faculty eligible for a sabbatical must complete and submit the sabbatical application form by December 1 of the academic year prior to the year of the planned sabbatical. Faculty will receive the online form from the Office of Faculty Affairs through Interfolio. The application will be reviewed and approved by the Dean’s Office and then submitted to the Office of Academic Appointments for final approval
The sabbatical clock starts at the point of hire. (Note: Time in a visiting position does not count toward the sabbatical clock.) Once a sabbatical is taken, the clock restarts immediately after the sabbatical ends. For example, if a faculty member takes a sabbatical in Fall 2017, their sabbatical clocks restarts with Spring 2018. They are eligible for their next sabbatical after six semesters (in Spring 2021 @ ¾ salary) or after six years (in Spring 2024 at 100% salary).
Faculty are encouraged to take a sabbatical when they are eligible in order to avoid losing time on their sabbatical clock. For example, if a faculty member is eligible for a sabbatical in Spring 2017 but instead chooses to take it a semester later in Fall 2017, his or her sabbatical clock restarts in Spring 2018 rather than Fall 2017.
Please note that at times a school may ask a faculty member to defer a sabbatical. This may occur if there are too many faculty on leave in a particular semester, or if a faculty member is needed to chair a committee or program. In these cases, the deferred sabbatical is at the school’s request and the faculty member’s sabbatical clock may be adjusted.
* If a sabbatical is taken in the Fall semester at 3/4 salary, the faculty member will receive reduced pay for the following six months: October, November, December, January, February and March. If a sabbatical is taken in the Spring semester at 3/4 salary, the faculty member will receive reduced pay for the following six months: April, May, June, July, August and September.
