Several months before the start of the semester, faculty will be emailed instructions for ordering course material. This email will include instructions for ordering books through the NYU Bookstore, placing requests for desk copies, and placing course material on reserve at the library. It will also include guidelines for photocopying and creating course packs. All of these instructions are noted below, along with information about NYU's audio, video, and other media resources, and important guidelines for student film and media projects.
NYU offers many databases and services that instructors can use to access and share audio, video, and other media with students, including:
Academic Video Online (Alexander Street Press) is a video streaming collection of more than 66,000 films with a broadly multidisciplinary range of subject areas.
Avery Fisher Center for Music & Media offers an extensive video and audio collection available for lending.
Kanopy is licensed by NYU and provides access to contemporary and classic feature films and documentaries, from the major Hollywood studios and well as independent and international filmmakers.
Swank Digital Campus Portal is a video streaming service that instructors can use to request videos that students can access via the Brightspace Course Reserves integration (under More Tools).
NYU Stream is the University's streaming service, providing a way for NYU members to store and share audio, video, and image files. Stream also has a variety of other features, including collaboration tools, analytics, screen recording, and captioning/transcription services. See the Audio & Video section of Tools for Teaching & Learning for more information on these features, or Sharing Your Video on NYU Brightspace for instructions on how to share your Stream video on Brightspace.
NYU Libraries Guide to Video Streaming contains more information on NYU-licensed services.
If you need help locating film and video titles, contact the Office of Faculty Affairs (facultyservices.gallatin@nyu.edu). Once you locate your media, you have the option to share it with students in your NYU Brightspace course site. Register for Gallatin NYU Brightspace Training to access step-by-step instructions for how to add the various types of content listed above, as well as third-party services such as YouTube and Vimeo.
In order to assure that your books arrive in time, please place your order as soon as possible after you receive the book order email.
Before the semester begins, instructors may want to visit the NYU Bookstore to make sure that their books are in stock. Books can be found in the rear part of the main floor of the NYU Bookstore.
If you do not plan to adopt any materials, please let the Bookstore know so it can list the class as “no texts required.” If you have any questions, feel free to contact Nancy Wetmore-Mathews at 212-998-4681, or via email at wsq.text@nyu.edu.
Log into Brightspace at brightspace.nyu.edu and select NYU Bookstore on the top menu, which will take you to the Follett website.
Click on your upcoming term and the classes you are registered to teach.
Scroll to the bottom of the page and use Quick Re-Adopt if you’ve used the same books in the past.
If you are new to the course, enter the ISBN, title, or author to search for the book/material you want to use.
*Note: If you would like to provide digital materials through the ACCESS program, once you have adopted your title, click on it to go to the information screen. Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Add to a Follett Access Program. Click YES to the pop-up and your Access request will automatically be sent to the bookstore. The Access program delivers your course material to your students at the lowest possible price.
You can also submit book orders by emailing the Bookstore directly at wsq.text@nyu.edu. Please provide them with the following information for each text so that the correct book is ordered:
ISBN
Book title
Author
Publisher
Edition/Year
Instructors have the opportunity to request complimentary desk copies of their course books each semester. You can email Gallatin’s Office of Faculty Affairs, who is happy to request complimentary desk copies of your course books directly from the publishers.
Please note that you must have already submitted your book order to the NYU Bookstore prior to the request of a desk copy. Most publishers will not provide desk copies without proof of a full book order. It is important to note that not all publishers grant requests for desk copies.
Desk copies will be mailed to the Gallatin office. Please allow 4-6 weeks for your copies to arrive. You will be notified when your desk copies are ready for pick up.
If you are planning to create a course pack, we encourage you to use the NYU Bookstore, which will obtain copyright permissions for the contents of your packet.
Please send an email to the NYU Bookstore course pack team at coursepacks@nyu.edu. Be sure to include your course number and course name with your citations when you submit your requests.
Required course-related materials can be placed on reserve at the NYU Libraries for students to use. Course Reserves materials include print items (available at Bobst), as well as audio and video items, and music books and scores (available at the Avery Fisher Center (AFC). Please visit the library’s Place Materials on Course Reserve for more information.
Instructors can use the Course Reserves integration in NYU Brightspace to allow students to access course reserves directly from your course site. See NYU Brightspace: Course Reserves Integration (Main article) for more information.
Photocopying is available at the Bobst Library Computer Center and at Gallatin, on each floor where faculty offices are located. You are welcome to use these throughout the semester for small course-related copy and scan jobs, as long as you follow the Library's fair use guidelines and NYU’s Policy on Copyright and Fair Use. What this means is that you can, on occasion, photocopy an article, but you cannot photocopy weekly readings, a whole book, etc.
If you need assistance with copying or scanning materials with one of Gallatin's machines, please see Printing Assistance.
Information about Gallatin printers can be found in Gallatin's guide to Technology, Operations, and Facilities Assistance. There are also many print stations located throughout NYU. See NYU Print Service for information on how to print from these stations, and note that faculty, as well as students and staff, are given a print quota each semester to use in all NYU computer labs. You can find information on print quotas for students and faculty at NYU Print Service: Print Grant amount and eligibility.
For 3D printing resources, see the Computer/Media Labs & Makerspaces section of Technology Resources.
Gallatin students are permitted to pursue film and media projects for class so long as they are in accordance with the school's Production Safety Guidelines for Media Production. Faculty advising on film and media projects should familiarize themselves with this document and provide it to all students planning film and video projects for coursework, independent studies, senior theses, and any other school sponsored projects.
