Manuscript Workshop Fund
Overview
In 2019-2020 Gallatin launched a manuscript workshop initiative to help Assistant and Associate Professors complete their scholarly books. With additional funding provided by the Office of the Provost to enhance faculty research at Gallatin, the School is pleased to continue and expand this program to all full-time faculty beginning in 2023-2024.
As part of this program, Gallatin invites two or three scholars of the faculty member’s choice to New York to read and offer extensive feedback on a book manuscript, discuss publishing options, and generate a community of academic support. While the format has varied, typically workshop attendees stay one or two nights in NYC (if they are traveling from out of town), conduct the workshop over the course of a single day (divided into two sessions of 2-3 hours), and enjoy a catered lunch and post-workshop dinner. In addition to organizing and covering travel, food, and accommodations, Gallatin provides an honorarium to each workshop participant.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
All full-time Gallatin faculty are eligible to apply for a manuscript workshop. While all faculty are eligible, special consideration will go to faculty at the early stages of their career and those who have not previously held a workshop. In order to participate, manuscripts must be complete or nearly complete (all but one chapter) at the time invitations for workshops are extended.
For tenure-track faculty, it is important to remember that workshop participants are ineligible to serve as tenure and promotion letter writers. Additionally, NYU faculty and New York City area academics are welcome to serve as workshop participants.
APPLICATION PROCESS
If you are interested in holding a manuscript workshop, contact Associate Dean of Faculty Alejandro Velasco (av48@nyu.edu) to discuss timing, format, and potential participants.
Gallatin’s budget is $3000 to cover travel, meals, accommodations, and honoraria for up to three workshop participants. The Office of the Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs will organize all workshop logistics in coordination with the faculty convener.
