We require a two-semesters commitment because in that amount of time, externs acquire a rich, rounded, and worthwhile experience. Some externs may be invited to continue beyond two semesters.
Tips for Success | Treat your time in the lab as if you were at your place of employment. That means work productively and efficiently while you are here, ask for deadlines or time-frames for any new task, and ask for guidance when you are feeling confused.
If you have been cleared to receive an NYU ID card from HR, please go to the NYU Card Center at 7 Washington Place. If you are required to go in-person to the lab or to a recruitment location for a shift, please remember to have your NYU ID card on you at all times, as you will not be granted access into the building or floor without it.
Please enter the building at 386 Park Ave South, between 27th and 28th Street. Our lab is located on the 17th floor.
Google Calendar on smart phones can be outdated/distorted. Use the web-based version.
Shifts & Supervision When you start your shift, you will first sign onto your NYU/Gmail account and check the ‘FTRG NYU Extern’ calendar to see your assignment(s) for that particular day along with the respective supervisor (i.e., the staff member to whom you will report for that task). Our lab is unique in that we typically have many projects with multiple staff members working on each; therefore, any staff member—depending on a few factors (the task, who is available, who is on-site, etc.)—may have the chance to supervise you. Ultimately, your supervisor can assist you if you need help or have a question. If you are unable to get ahold of a particular staff member, please ask any other staff member in the lab for assistance.
Google Chat Messaging staff on Google Chat is the best way to reach a staff member during work hours. All externs will be required to be available on Google Chat during their shifts.
Email Please check your email regularly so that you do not miss important emails coming from the lab. You will be expected to respond to emails within 48 hours, even if you do not have a shift that day. In terms of professional development, this is a great habit to get into. Make sure to mark the FTRGexternship@gmail.com and FTRGexternship@nyu.edu address as not spam!
Cloud storage space we use for all of our files. Similar to Google Drive and Microsoft One Drive.
Only one person can edit a synced document at a time. Should a document title say "Conflicted Copy" please notify the staff member who assigned you the task.
If you’ve completed all of your assigned work for the day, you should contact your supervisor to see if there are additional tasks for you. Under no circumstance should you end your shift early without the permission of a supervisor. Before you end your shift, you must email your supervisor to provide them with an update on where you left off on their task. We value externs who can work reliably, yet efficiently, but we understand some tasks—especially new ones—might take longer than expected. To be successful researchers, you must be communicative and exhibit the integrity we expect in all of our staff.
