In default settings, every image we capture with a digital camera that has metadata settings turned on contains information about the following:

• Date and time the image was captured.
• Information about the device the image was captured with.
• The location the image was captured (if location settings were enabled).
• Settings of the camera. These often refer to camera settings that determine the exposure of the image like focal length, shutter speed, ISO (sensitivity to light), etc.

This information is embedded into the image file and is commonly referred to as metadata. Metadata for images is termed as EXIF data which stands for Exchangeable Image File Format.

Remember:

1. Be cautious when solely trusting metadata for verification because it can be modified and deleted.
2. When images are uploaded to social platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, metadata is often removed.
