Brainstorming
Creating the Website/Lookbook/Graphics
My project translates Rick Owens's intentional use of materials into two connected pieces. The digital piece, Table of Matter, is a one-page website styled as a periodic table, where each element stands for a material he works with, such as marble, bronze, leather, and plywood. I used UX design and coding to make his process my own: where he shapes materials into furniture and clothing, I shaped them into an interactive experience. Hovering over an element reveals a piece made from that material, so the differences across his work can be compared. The physical Lookbook is a risograph-printed lookbook documenting my design process. I dithered the images to create a grainy texture, and riso printing adds to that tactile quality.
Code
Rick Owens builds from raw materials and restricted forms, shaping them directly instead of decorating them. I approached code the same way. I wrote the site in plain HTML, the most basic code language, because it keeps the structure visible, with no frameworks or extra layers hiding how it is built.
