My study first abroad was in Abu Dhabi for the 2022 Spring Semester. This experience completely changed my ideas of friendship, other cultures, and my career. Learning about the United Arab Emirates taught me how slight cultural and societal differences can lead to a completely unique way of life. The intense but effective teaching and working style, our class trips, and the belief in holding the things important to oneself extremely sacred are all among the things from this trip that I'll never forget.
I studied abroad in Indonesia during the 2024 Spring Semester. I participated in the 2024 J-term course on Sustainability hosted by the Bandung Institute of Technology School of Business and Management (SBM ITB). We were taught about Indonesian culture, history, and language and were able to visit a couple sites to learn about sustainable communities in Indonesia. We visited Teras Hijau, a mix between a community garden, makerspace, and school. We also visited Sokola Motekar and learned about their circular economy and commune way of life. I learned a lot about how important it is to make do with what a person has at their disposal and that the impact they make is just as meaningful as efforts made by someone with more resources.
I volunteered as a crisis analyst for the 2022 EmpireMUN. At the conference, delegates from various high schools had the opportunity to compete and debate as historical figures during real events. My job was to work in a team to write and guide the story the students were creating through their decisions and actions. The experience taught me about compromise and the importance of central leadership in a fast-paced situation. This relates to my mission statement in that it taught me skills to collaborate with people who have different areas of expertise than I do.
I volunteered in Arusha, Tanzania under the Karibu Foundation. I volunteered at Canosa Medical Dispensary, where I helped doctors take patient measurements such as blood pressure and heart rate and enter data into their system. I also helped out at Osiligi Orphanage where I added to a PowerPoint presentation to include new arrivals at the orphanage. I also did construction work at a school called Mother's Mercy where I hauled and laid bricks and prepared vegetables. This experience relates to my mission statement in that it allowed me to witness first-hand the kinds of food security and clean, accessible water issues that need to be solved in the world.
I volunteered as an Orientation leader for the Fall 2022 semester where I made many new friends. I learned how to keep a class engaged and motivated as well as how to plan and lead activities and events.
I worked as a computer science tutor at the NYU Polytechnic Tutoring Center. Here I did one-on-one and group tutoring sessions with students learning intro to computer science concepts like coding in python, data structures, and algorithms. I learned a lot about teaching as well as about how to handle different professional social situations.
I participated online in the 2021 undergraduate summer research program and worked with Dr. Chow (Professor) and Bingqing Liu (Mentor). My research project for the duration of the program was to discover the economic impact on NYC of transitioning its fossil fuel powered school bus fleet to a fully electric bus fleet. I learned about data analysis and gathering as well as different forms of technical writing and presentation. The experience introduced me to various python packages used for data analysis like pandas, as well as IDEs like Spyder and Jupyter Notebook.
I participated in the Urban Food Lab vertically integrated project (UFL). I helped set the farm back up after the Covid-19 lockdown and learned a lot about urban farming, hydroponics, and aquaponics throughout my time at UFL. Something valuable that I gained here that I'll never forget is the passion I developed for plants, sustainability, and ecology.
My first internship was at Anubis LMS during the semester of Fall 2022. Anubis LMS is a learning management system created by a Tandon Alumni. It is an open-source project and my contribution was on the front-end of the Anubis web app. I learned a lot about cloud technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, and Virtual Machines while interning here for a semester.
My internship at Peeramid, a mental health app startup at NYU FutureLabs, started the semester of Spring 2023, through the Summer of 2023. Here, I learned about web and mobile application development and used Typescript with React Native to help develop functionalities for the Peeramid IOS app.
