The Black Youth Mental Health Initiative

  Mission

According to data released by the Congressional Black Caucus, Black youth are at an increased risk of suicidal ideation, attempts, and death by suicide. In addition to increased suicide risk, Black youth are experiencing increases in depressive episodes, substance use, and serious mental illness (SAMHSA, 2020). In addition to an increased likelihood of mental illness, Black youth are also likely to be subject to institutional oppression across systems healthcare, economic, criminal justice, legal, educational, and environmental systems.

The Black Youth Mental Health Initiative grant, was awarded by the US Department of Health and Human Services to support Richmond Public Schools in identifying the mental health needs of Black youth and to prevent suicidal ideations, attempts, and deaths. The initiative will implement policies that create multi-tiered support systems for students. To ensure Black youth have access to culturally responsive mental health resources and services, the Black Youth Mental Health Initiative will adopt a whole-child policy approach to support the mental health of Black youth.
