By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
Build on the skills introduced in week 9 and produce a fully-fleshed out production around a pre-existing demo
Write a short response detailing the reasoning behind specific production choices
You are a producer who has just received a vocal demo from an artist who would like to work with you. You will then create a full production around that demo track using a DAW, adding groove, bass, textural, and contrapuntal elements. You will first need to get a good handle on the demo melody and harmony (perhaps through transcription) and then decide what elements to add to help capture the songwriter’s vision. In addition, you will write a short response explaining your production decisions, perhaps mentioning sources of inspiration from the many songs we will have explored during the semester.
All of us are coming into this project with different levels of experience and familiarity of recording and sequencing in a DAW. Thus, the project will not be evaluated on artistic merits. Projects will be evaluated primarily on completion, with some attention paid to harmonic & groove accuracy (how well your accompaniments fit with the pitch & rhythmic material of the demo) and your reasoning for making certain production choices.
