How to pronounce my first name: "Young"
Hi! I’m a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), working with Dr. Sharifa Sultana. Before coming to Illinois, I earned my Bachelor's and Master’s degrees at National Yang-Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) in Taiwan, where I was part of the Everyday Creativity Lab, advised by Dr. Ying-Yu Chen.
My research in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) explores shared experience in family contexts and designing with underrepresented groups, aiming to interpret how technology can support meaning-making processes in people's daily lives. I employ a theory-guided, ethnographically inspired approach (e.g., interview, diary, observation), alongside design research methods (e.g., user-centered design, research-through-design, co-design). I'm now working with parents and children to understand energy-conserving negotiations within households, and co-designing with Southeast Asian immigrant mothers through storytelling workshops.
In my downtime, you can find me traveling with friends, enjoying reading poetry, and exploring ways to stay creative, like calligraphy🖋️, crafting🧵, and meditation🧘.
I'm always happy to chat and collaborate! Feel free to drop me a line at yangh9@illinois.edu.
