Principal's Note:
Hello, last newsletter I reviewed the expectations of distance learning vs. e-Learning. These expectations are also included in each newsletter via the link provided. I'm very proud of how well our students and staff were able to work together online despite the challenges.
Starting this week the Northwestern Middle School academic model is shifting to offer some targeted intervention help during homeroom time. The level of intervention is determined by the teacher after reviewing the student's performance on the i-Learn checkpoint examinations which I covered in our first newsletter this school year. In the future, this will be a targeted two week instruction during homeroom for Math and Language Arts. Students scoring below certain benchmarks on the examination will receive more targeted intervention, but all students can expect to have work aligned to benchmarks.
This Thursday at 7pm in the Cafeteria, we will have our annual Washington D.C. meeting for 7th grade students/families who are interested in attending the Washington D.C. Trip in the fall. I highly suggest you attend if you or your student want to go on the trip. During this year's inauguration ceremony I was astounded to watch events that were occurring in the exact same spots our students and staff stood just a few weeks ago while we toured the Capitol.

N.M.S. Principal

Friendship is a huge part of middle school life. I'm even sometimes referred to as "man's best friend". So perhaps I'm qualified to offer some advice for keeping positive healthy friendships: Here are some do's and don'ts of friendship:
Do's:
Ask about their day: Show genuine interest in what's going on in their life.
Offer help when needed: Be willing to lend a hand with tasks or just be a listening ear.
Celebrate their successes: Be genuinely happy for their accomplishments.
Be empathetic: Try to understand their perspective and feelings.
Be open-minded: Be willing to hear different viewpoints and consider new ideas.
Give them space: Being around someone all the time can be tiresome. Sitting or talking with other friends should be encouraged.
Don'ts:
Gossip about them: Keep their secrets safe and avoid talking negatively about them to others.
Be judgmental: Accept them for who they are and avoid criticizing them excessively.
Dominate conversations: Give them space to share their thoughts and experiences.
Cancel plans frequently: Be reliable and try to stick to commitments you make.
Ignore their needs: Be aware of their emotional state and respond accordingly.
Be suffocating: Demanding someone only talk to you or sit with you at lunch (for example) can overwhelm a friendship. Most of the time a friend is too afraid to tell you they need some space. If someone isn't sitting with you or inviting you to plans it may just mean they have other friends and that's not a bad thing.
The season for weather delays is approaching. Please review our distance learning page for more information in case of school closure.
Reminder
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions, immunization updates, medication to drop off: ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had multiple incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
