Principal's Note:
I'd like to welcome you back to a new school year. Before the school year began you should have received our back to school message (click to view). I encourage you to click and re-read the message because it contains a lot of information.
One of the most impactful academic changes this school year will be Northwestern's inclusion in the pilot of ILEARN Checkpoint testing. The three things we're looking most forward to in this inclusion are: less time on testing, more meaningful and impactful state assesments, and data about student growth throughout the year. In the past students would take our state assessment at the end of the school year and we'd obtain data that would impact teaching and learning for the next school year. Now, with 'checkpoints' students will take smaller assessments three times a year that can be used to guide instruction before the end-of-year ILEARN Assessment. These 'checkpoints' are not shared publicly like the end of the year assessment and do not have an impact on the student's grades. They are simply to help educators understand how students are learning state standards throughout the school year.
An additional academic change I'd like to discuss begins with our current 8th grade students. The IDOE has reintroduced a requirement for a course that we've had in the past at the HS level: "Preparing for College and Careers." Now, all 8th grade students at NW will be exploring career options, soft skills, and goals for the future to get credit towards this class. These will include doing projects on soft skills, setting goal sheets, having guest speakers, and visiting Ivy Tech, IUK, a career day, and the Kokomo Career Center.

Message from Assistant Principal Mr. Ward:
I'm using this opportunity to inform you of a program we have in place at N.M.S. called Catchup Cafe'. Students are assigned Cafe' to work on missing assignments with either a teachers aid or Mrs. Mendhall while they eat. Additionally, if students need homework help we have after-school tutoring in room S-10 of the high school until 3:30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If your child attends please make sure you pick them up at the North or East end of the HS due to traffic associated with the elementary pickup.
One easy way to check your child's grades involves their iPad. You can click the 'Skyward' App on their iPad. Your student login is located on the back 29.C.Ward and the password is their NWLunchPin (6digitcode).
If you need to find assigments in Google classroom login to www.google.com. Click the three dots at the top right of the screen and choose 'Google Classroom.' Scroll down to the 'To-DO' list This wlil show you current and missing assigmnents.
Finally, If you drop off a child in the morning please do not drop off your child in the construction zone. Instead, please utlize the sidewalk by door 9 if dropping off in the morning. The afternoon car-rider pickup is located in the band parking lot on the northside of the HS. Students use the purple crosswalk by door 43. We also have an after-school room with a supervisor until 3:25pm located in the High School library. It is the expectation for students to not wander the hallways after-school if they are waiting for a parent to pick them up.
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at
ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3014.
Rachele Temme is our 8th Grade Team Leader. If you have specific questions about 8th grade academics/grades/etc. please email rachele.temme@nwsc.k12.in.us
Michelle Sinnamon is our 7th Grade Team Leader. If you have questions about 7th grade academics/grades/etc. please email michele.sinnamon@nwsc.k12.in.us
Reminder
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions/immunization updates ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
Students earn tiger stripes for being a positive example. Each tiger stripe is entered in a drawing for each Friday and also registered for end-of-year awards.
Students in Mrs. Sinnamon's class are working with LEGO Robotics.
We will be offering fundraising opportunities again for World's Finest Chocolate. We use the money generated from this fundraiser for our student incentives and rewards such as Tiger Stripes. Every student who sells a box is invited to a pizza party. Students who sell 3 boxes or more will be guaranteed a prize at the party. The top seller will win an pizza party invite, first choice of prizes, and a giant chocolate bar.
Students: Social Cues are important. Knowing and understanding social norms can help in a dog eat dog world.
Encourage eye contact when speaking with others. For many it's a show of respect. However, don't get upset if someone isn't making eye contact. Someone not making eye contact may not be comfortable in the situation.
Give full attention: If you're texting or checking your phone while someone is trying to have a conversation with you they may feel like you're neglecting their thoughts/opinions.
Facial expressions are important: You may not always know it, but your facial expression can be just as important at communicating how you feel.
Different situations have different expectations: They way you speak to your friends in the gym or at lunch is not the same as you should speak with an adult. "What's up Bruh" may be great with your friends, but most adults won't appreciate it.
Say sorry: Everyone messes up sometimes. There is nothing wrong with saying "sorry", or "I didn't mean what I said to be taken that way." Also, if you're willing to ask forgiveness you must be willing to forgive.
Spots still avaliable: Click on the flyer.
