Marley Rees
Marley said her favorite thing about NMS is her teachers. She lists Mrs. Sparling and Schuler as her favorites.
Christian Short
His favorite thing about NMS is the 'quality of education' and he loves Mrs. Kintzel's humor.
Principal's Note:
In our last newsletter I explained how iLearn Checkpoint testing is now being utilized in Math and Language Arts instruction. That is NOT the same as iLearn testing the last two weeks of April. These are only 25-30 mins of tests designed to let the teacher know how the student is learning the information. We will still have the iLearn tests the last two weeks of April and ask that you avoid family vacations or planned appointments during the April exams.
Please note next Wednesday, October 16th, we do not have school. Instead, we will conduct parent/teacher conferences in the Middle School Gym from 11am-6pm. Each teacher will have a designated table and parents are welcome to visit any teacher they wish to speak with on a first-come, first-served basis. If you're waiting for a teacher feel free to sit at a lunch table to wait. If you need to speak with your child's teacher and they teach at the High School, please note their open hours are 4pm-6pm and they meet by appointment only from 11am-4pm.
After fall-break this year 8th graders will either be attending the Washington D.C. field trip or participating in local adventures regarding career exploration and enrichment. Thank you to Mrs. Temme who has worked tirelessly finding opportunities for those students that are unable to attend the D.C. trip.
Additionally, we like to have a good time at N.M.S. Hopefully your child enjoyed homecoming week, the pep session, and our school dance. Due to scheduling constraints we had to move our Christmas Dance to Nov. 16th. This year, we will have a Semi-Formal 'Harvest Ball' on Nov. 16th in the M.S. Gym 5pm-7pm.

Message from Assistant Principal Mr. Ward:
Recently there have been some questions about eligibility requirements for sports and event participation. To participate in school sports you must be considered in 'good standing' with your grades. To be considered for participation you must be passing five of your classes. If you are deemed 'ineligible' due to 9-weeks grades you may not play until the next qualifying event. In the case of grades, that would be mid-term.
Additionally, if you miss school for any reason, such as illness or suspension, you are not allowed to participate in athletic or extracurricular activities, including events like dances or concerts, on that same day. Simply put, if you're too sick to attend school, you should stay home in the evening to rest and recover. We do understand that sometimes there are extraordinary circumstances and these do not include pre-arranged approved absences.
My family is also happy to announce the arrival of our third child, Brooks Patrick Ward, on 9/29. Due to Brooks arrival I'll be taking some time off in October, but will still be checking emails and should be back full-time after Fall Break.
Please feel free to reach out anytime with questions or concerns involving your child. I can be reached at ryan.ward@nwsc.k12.in.us or my ext.3104.

Computer Science (Mr. Wise): We have been working on digital citizenship in Computer Science, so please ask your student about that! They are being told in class that they can also help parents and grandparents with their digital citizenship skills. We are all in the same boat, so the more we know about this the more secure we will be in our digital world!
Reminder
Contact our School Nurses if you have questions/immunization updates, medication to drop off: ext: 2320
jodi.galbraith@nwsc.k12.in.us ; elizabeth.smith@nwsc.k12.in.us or call the school.
We ask that if your child is not feeling well at school they should ask to see our school nurse. We've had multiple incidents where a parent has come to check out a student for illness and no one has known they weren't feeling well. Students who go home and are not sick will be unexcused. We appreciate your support and understanding.
Students participated in our Fall Sports Pep-Session. It's our goal to have a pep session each sports season.
Congraulations to Ian Burns for selling the most chocolate bars in our fundraiser. Ian obtained the 5lb Chocolate Bar for being the top seller. He and every student who sold boxes will also get to participate in our pizza/prize party (once all money is collected). The funds collected are used to help support our student incentives and our support dog Rocky.
Thank You!
Thank you to everyone who supported our FFA Feed the Farmers Program
Thank you to everyone who helped during the chocolate fundraiser. Also, I appreciate the 7th graders who donated supplies to Mrs. Bowen to help with our annual humane society fundraiser to help my friends.

The Northwestern TIGER PRIDE Band competed at the ISSMA Regional on Saturday. We got rained, poured, thundered, and lightning'd on (see the picture!), but the kids persevered and had a strong performance, earning a GOLD Rating including Distinction in Visual Performance!
Their performance placed them 5th place in our class and advanced them to the ISSMA Semi-State in Indy on October 26.
Please congratulate the kids if you see them today!
Also, don't forget that all of our members will miss Friday classes this week - and unfortunately the home football game :( - because we are performing in the Bands of America competition at Lucas Oil Stadium.
