Welcome to our ELT Prototype Site! This site is a work in progress and will shift to meet the needs of our ELTs.
As Equity Learning Teams engage in their continued learning, they also begin to move into equity action through examining their systems and identifying an equity challenge.
An equity challenge names the inequitable experiences and/or outcomes that you want to influence. This is different from naming a problem in your approach - or a potential solution - which is what we call a design challenge. You can start with a design challenge, but will want to connect it to an equity challenge.
An equity challenge is something that:
Is specific enough that you can name particular groups, even individuals, who are most impacted (historically marginalized - e.g. by race, gender, class, language, citizenship).
You are positioned to influence in some way.
You care deeply about and is important to your work.
A design challenge (or opportunity) names something in your approach that is contributing to inequitable outcomes or experiences. E.g. practices, processes, policies, structures.
Often, people will initially name a focus that’s actually a design challenge (i.e. something about your approach). If so, it’s important to articulate the equity challenge (i.e. people) that addressing this design challenge is intended to impact.
An equity challenge articulates an inequitable pattern of outcomes or experiences for people that you want to change.
An equity challenge can be:
External: inequity for those you serve (e.g. students, families)
Internal: inequity for those in your organization (e.g. staff)
