Transition Checklist (below) - Optional REMINDERS to support transition to Gmail and Google Calendar
Before Thursday 6/8 (before email migration)
If you have any pinned emails in Outlook, you will have to search for these emails in Gmail and star them. Since you will lose access to Outlook on our go-live 6/9 date, it may be helpful to take a screenshot of any pinned emails in Outlook.
If you have Outlook folders in your Sent, Drafts or Trash, these folders should be dragged to your Outlook Inbox before the migration date.
If you have recurring events in Outlook Calendar, make a list of them to double check that they all come over in Google Calendar since you won’t have access to check this on June 9. If some recurring events are missing in Google Calendar, you’ll have to rebuild the recurring events, but at least you’ll know if they’re missing.
Take a screenshot (or make a list) of calendar events in Outlook so that you can be sure all events come over in Google Calendar. If anything is missing, you will have to rebuild them in Google Calendar, but at least you’ll know they’re missing.
Friday 6/9 (go-live date)
Check Gmail. Verify that mail and labels (i.e folders in Outlook) migrated correctly.
Search for previously pinned emails and star them in Gmail
Turn on My Signature setting in Gmail.
Settings gear -> See All Settings -> General -> CHECK the BOX that says “Insert signature before quoted text in replies…”
Check Google Calendar. Verify that your events, including recurring events, migrated. Rebuild any missing events.
In Google Calendar, subscribe (+) to other calendars you manage
Set an out-of-office message for the summer by turning on the Vacation Responder in gmail. Settings gear -> See All Settings -> General -> Vacation Responder
Remember to change mail/calendar apps on your Phone.
Wait to do this until June 9, so that your contacts come over correctly to gmail.
Delete Outlook account on Phone
Change to Gmail and Google Calendar
After Friday 6/9,
Check Spam, especially in the first week after migration.
Mark Not Spam anything that should not be there
REMINDER: Spam deletes automatically every 30 days!

Screencastify
Effective Saturday 10/1, there will no longer be a 5-minute time limit on the free version. The time limit will be extended to 30 minutes, but users will be capped at 10 total videos.
If you already have more than 10 videos recorded, it will not allow you to record anything new unless you delete videos in your Screencastify library. See instructions at right to delete some of these recordings, if you wish:
Alternatives to Screencastify for Students and Teachers:
Students: Moving forward, students can use SeeSaw (elementary), Flip (formerly Flipgrid) or the built-in screen-recorder on their Chromebook, which provides unlimited record time and can easily be stored in Google Drive and turned in.

Teachers: Recommendations for teacher screencasts (since we're not on Chromebooks) are: https://screencast-o-matic.com/, EdPuzzle, or Kami. Or, continue using free Screencastify while staying under the 10 video limit.

Kahoot reminder:
If you use live Kahoots, please be sure to enable the setting "Show Questions & Answers on players' devices" (see below). This is very helpful for learning support students. It is very difficult for them to look up and down at multiple screens and try to select the correct answers, let alone remember the question. This would benefit some of our regular ed students as well. Once you enable the setting, I believe it will keep for your live Kahoots moving forward.

February 2022 | All Levels
Last week, SeeSaw announced that they have newly created "Seesaw Lessons." To start, they launched 4 sets of free K-2 lessons on the following topics:
*Fun Phonemes - 42 lessons PreK - K
*Numbers in Space - 21 lessons K-2
*SEL Stories - 30 lessons grades K-2 - TIES in with Second Step Lessons
*STEAM - 13 lessons grades K-2 in a variety of science topics
Note: There are also a bunch of paid lesson sets, as well as a separate full subscription to access all paid lessons.
Each set of lessons is accompanied by a teacher implementation guide and an overview video. There are also tabs to separate each grade level's lessons
The lessons themselves are student-focused and interactive, using Seesaw's tools to get students applying, extending and interacting with the content. They also allow for copying and editing :)
Each individual lesson is includes an overview, a copy & edit feature to make it your own, and a "view as student" option

Tech Updates and Reminders #3
Hello! This is the last *chunk* of technology updates/reminders for the start the year.
Thank you for taking the time to read them.
Breakout Edu (K-12)
We have full access to Breakout Edu for another year.
This includes access to all digital and physical breakouts on the Breakout Edu site.
Login: tigertech@zimbra.nwlehighsd.org, tigerpride
A breakout is similar to an escape room but with a curricular focus. Instead of trying to escape from a locked room, students are trying to break into a locked box by solving clues related to what they're learning.
You (or students) can also create custom digital breakouts through the platform.
BrainPOP/BrainPOP Jr. (Elem. + MS only)
Has so much more to offer than videos!
REMINDER! There are activities, games, and other interactive components for every topic.
Read about those “other components” here. https://educators.brainpop.com/tools-features-support/
To access:
NWE Teachers: Login with Clever
MS Teachers (may ask for an educator code): SFVZ779
WEIS Teachers: Login with Clever
Edpuzzle (MS and HS only)
NEW! Both the MS and HS have access to EdPuzzle Pro accounts for 2 years.
Teachers with Edpuzzle accounts were automatically upgraded to Pro.
New teachers should register with this link to get upgraded as well: https://edpuzzle.com/schools/join/network/8h7aq7
"Get started with EdPuzzle" series: YouTube playlist
NEW! Students can do screen recordings and audio recordings within Edpuzzle!
Kami (Grades 2 - 12)
Grades 2 - 12 staff and students have access to Kami Pro for the next 2 years
REMINDER: Kami can open more than .pdfs.
It can open image files like .jpgs, .pngs as well as Google Docs and Google Slides.
REMINDER: Use "Kami Assignments" in Google classroom/Canvas in order for students to receive their own copy, annotate with Kami and submit.
Lastly, please know that I am an extension of you as a classroom teacher. Beyond sending out these updates, I am more than happy to help brainstorm, plan and implement with you in your classroom!

Location of outdoor wifi at each school
Tech Updates and Reminders #2
Last week, I sent out several Google updates/reminders. This next set of updates relate to a variety of topics: Outdoor Wifi, Video Streaming, Promethean ActivPanels (Elem. + MS only), SeeSaw (Elem. only).
1. Outdoor wifi is installed for all buildings
Internet can be accessed outside for teaching and learning on any district device (Chromebook, laptop, iPad).
Access points for outdoor wifi are installed outside each school at various locations (see chart above for location and coverage)
2. Video Streaming
REMINDER: We no longer have access to Safari Montage content.
Please know that Discovery Streaming, BrainPOP/Jr (Elem + MS), YouTube, etc. are the main resources we have for quality video streaming.
Login to Discovery Streaming to start curating a “quicklist” of:
Videos, Interactives, Lessons, Activities, Images, Text, Audio samples, etc.
Content can be filtered by Reading Level, Lexile Level, etc.
Login to Discovery here: https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/signin?UR=E
Login with Google
New users, I believe, will need a passcode:
NWE: dd8c-A2d4
WEIS: d5d9-1344
MS: 76a9-Fbab
HS: F49A-A213
3. Promethean ActivPanels (Elementary + MS only)
This is a change from our focus last year. Unless you are using ActivInspire to organize your lessons, try running your lesson on the Promethean Board without connecting your laptop to it. Now that we are mostly “Zoom-free” for instruction, it should be much easier to use the Promethean Board as a separate, second device.
REMINDER: Please set up a profile for you on the Promethean Board (separate from the Owner profile). It also recommended that you set up a pin (you choose) for your profile.
Please direct substitute teachers to use the Guest profile on your Promethean Board. They will have access to the Internet using the guest profile, but not to your Google Drive or any saved password-protected stuff.
REMINDER: To show a DVD on your new board, you will need to have your laptop connected to the board. However, when your laptop is connected to the board, you can enable "dual screen or extended mode" in order to show the DVD and access something different on your laptop.
4. SeeSaw (Elementary Only)
We have SeeSaw for Schools paid access.
REMINDER: You can complete a 1 hr course to become a SeeSaw Pioneer - join here
REMINDER: SeeSaw created a 4 hr essential SeeSaw skills course with a unique NWL enrollment link (expires June 30, 2022). Once enrolled, you have 60 days to complete. Enroll here
REMINDER: Need a refresher on some of the newer features in SeeSaw? I post all the SeeSaw emails I send out here, with information/resources on newer features as they become available.
Below is the previous email of Google updates/reminders sent last week.
Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions!

Tech Updates and Reminders #1
Good Morning! Please be aware that there are a bunch of tech-related updates and reminders to pass along to you. In hopes of not overwhelming you, I am going to send out chunks of updates in separate emails over the next week.
Today's email focuses on several Google updates and reminders worth knowing about!
Google Classroom
REMINDER: Please archive old Classrooms. You can still reuse posts from Archived Google Classrooms.
REMINDER: In each course, “hide” Classwork on the Stream notifications. Go to course settings -> Classwork on the Stream -> “Hide.” This prevents duplicate Classwork posts from clogging up the “Stream.”
REMINDER: Organize your Classwork sections by using Topics for all posts.
Google Docs
NEW! Tools -> “Compare Documents” feature. Compare any two Google documents in your Drive to see the differences between both documents. Learn how to use this new feature here: Video (3 mins): Compare Google Docs with Ease!
Google Expeditions VR and AR
NEW! It pains me to share that Google did away with Expeditions VR and AR in June :( I was hopeful that they would rebrand this over the summer, but that has not happened.
Instead, they uploaded over 400 of the VR Expeditions to the web, which can be accessed on any device here: https://artsandculture.google.com/search/exhibit?project=expeditions
These can be accessed on student devices, which might be helpful.
To search, Control + F or Command + F will bring up a keyword search box.
The AR Expeditions are no longer accessible.
Going forward, we can run other applications of VR/AR using our headsets/phones (Arts and Culture App, Youtube 360, Google Streetview 360, various AR apps). My hope is to find suitable replacements for VR/AR topics we’ve done in the past, but this will be a challenge for certain things.
Google Forms
NEW! Forms now automatically saves student Form responses as a draft for 30 days!!! This means that participants have 30 days to draft responses on a Form before they need to submit.
REMINDER: For those with students on Chromebooks, when you create a “Quiz” in Google Forms, you can turn on “Locked Mode on Chromebooks.” This locks students into the Google Form. Until they “Submit,” they are locked out of all other tabs and windows.
REMINDER: In Google Classroom, select “Quiz Assignment” and “Turn on Grade Importing” so that Form submissions and scores will be visible in Google Classroom.

SeeSaw: END OF YEAR 🎉 👏 🎓 😎!
Luckily, there isn't anything specific you need to do to wrap up your SeeSaw class(es). However, SeeSaw sent an email with 3 reminders on what NOT to do in order to ensure a smooth transition into next school year:
Do not delete or archive your class
Do not delete students or student work
Do NOT turn off family access
Have a wonderful last week :))!

Google Classroom: END OF YEAR 🎉 👏 🎓 😎!
Below are Google for Education's recommendations on closing out our Google Classrooms:
Step 1. Make sure all assignments are graded and returned
Step 2. Clean up Google Classroom Drive folder
Step 3. Hide or delete Google Classroom calendars
Step 4. Archive the Google Classroom
- Archiving will remove it from teacher and student dashboards
- Teachers can still reuse posts from archived classrooms
Setting up a Class Template
Kasey Bell (Ed Tech guru and blogger) recommends a 5th step, setting up a Class template for future years. If interested, check out her directions below.

SeeSaw Update: Progress
Please know that SeeSaw released an awesome new feature last week!
There's a new "Progress" tab on your SeeSaw course page that allows you to see both your class and individual students' activity completion in a very user-friendly way! It also allows you to generate/send progress reports based on their activity completion. HOORAY! 🎉
Note: this feature is only available on the web. It's not yet available on the mobile app.

Schoolytics
Wow, if you're using Google Classroom, I think this tool could be a game-changer! This company was developed by educators, for educators, and compiles Google Classroom data for all of your students and all of your Google Classrooms for free. It takes less than 5 minutes to login and see all of your Classroom data.
This tool compiles helpful information for each student in your Google Classroom(s) such as:
- Work Completion Rate
- On Time Completion Rate (%)
- Assignment Grade averages
- # of Student Submissions
- # of assignments in progress
and # of assignments not started.
It also provides averages and completion rates across each of your courses, topics and individual assignments.

Blooket
Blooket is a game-based formative assessment tool like Quizizz/Kahoot/Gimkit. Thank you to Maureen Roman for sharing this with me!
If you've used any of the game-based tools mentioned above, you'll find this to be just as easy to set up and play. What distinguishes Blooket from the others is its 8 unique game modes, which are fun to play! Blooket includes both homework and live game play options. There's also an option to use other people's sets, create your own or import from Quizlet, which many of us already use. Given its many game types/possibilities, Blooket provides something for any grade K - HS.
To the right is a video I created to overview Blooket:
- signing up
- creating sets
- discovering sets created by others
- assigning sets as homework
- playing live
- overviewing 8 game types
Students can, but do not have to, login with Google to play Blooket. Logging in allows them to keep track of the money they've earned through playing in order to purchase new Blooks in the Market, which I think, can be used during gameplay.

Jamboard templates
Many of us use and love Padlet! They are simple to create, simple to use and provide endless classroom applications for any grades/subject area.
Some of Padlet's newer features allow participants to capture video, record audio, create a screen recording, and draw right on their screen from within Padlet. When posting to a Padlet, the 3 dots at the bottom of the post will allow access to these features (see pics 1 and 2 at right).
Another feature of Padlet that is somewhat hidden is that you can allow students to comment or react (grade, star, upvote, like posts) to each others' posts in order to provide feedback. You can also turn on "Approve posts" to make sure directions are followed, etc before students can see/comment/provide feedback to one another (see pic 3 at right).
One of our colleagues engaged me in a discussion about these newer Padlet features and we thought it might be helpful to highlight these for everyone. Thanks, Gina!

Screensharing in Zoom
Streamline the process of sharing your screen in Zoom by selecting Desktop, or Screen (as it's listed on some computers). This way, students can see whatever you pull up for them, whether it's websites on the Internet, applications on your computer (e.g. ActivInspire, Smart Notebook), or a combination of the two (annotating over top of a website, etc). This simplifies things for you and ensures that students see all parts of what you are showing.

Originality Reports
A teaching tool for students to see whether they have sufficiently paraphrased and cited appropriately (Not a gotcha tool!)
As the assignment creator, you decide whether to turn on originality reports for each assignment. IMPORTANT: Originality reports can only be turned on for 3 assignments per Classroom. Students can run reports 3 times per assignment
The teacher will see the results of the originality reports when the assignment is submitted.

UPDATE: Google Slides Insert -> Audio
Emailed to all faculties 11/21/19.
After announcing last Spring that they were going launch Insert -> Audio for Google Slides, Google paused the rollout for months to fix some issues. I am happy to let you know that this new insert -> Audio function for Google Slides should be available for all users, both faculty and students.
The new insert -> audio feature allows us to embed narration, music, and/or sound effects into Google Slides creations. Please note: students will not be able to record their voice directly into Slides, but they can use any number of voice recorders (Online voice recorder, Twisted Wave, Voice Recorder Online, Audacity (Mac/PC), Garageband (Mac only) etc) to create an .mp3 that can now be embedded into Slides and played for the duration of their presentation.
