During the 2017-2018 school year there will be a collaborative event between Mr. Smoyer at the HS and Mrs. Smoyer at NWE to bring an Hour of Code to the elementary students. The fall Programming class will be going to NWE during Computer Science Education Week which is during the week of December 4th.
HS students will be partnering with the elementary classrooms to guide them in through the coding challenges created by code.org. They will also be bringing them some coding swag made in the HS STEAM Lab including laser cut keychains for their backpacks, vinyl stickers to put on their Chromebooks to mark their accomplishments, and a bookmark.
The ability to read and write code is an essential 21st century skill that right now is wildly underrepresented in our schools across the country. The statistics show that far too few students are getting exposed to coding during their school careers and consequently far too few students are selecting that major in college. Giving the prevalence of software and apps in our daily lives this is a global problem.
According to the founder of Code.org:
"The Hour of Code is designed to demystify code and show that computer science is not rocket-science, anybody can learn the basics," said Hadi Partovi, founder and CEO of Code.org. "Over 100 million students worldwide have tried an Hour of Code. The demand for relevant 21st century computer science education crosses all borders and knows no boundaries."
Our hope is to show students that writing code it not difficult and fun! The HS students will hopefully provide role models for the NWE students and they will be encouraged to keep coding and doing their best in their STEAM classes!
