8th grade students are given the opportunity to learn the skills of a reenactor and volunteer at the Lynn-Heidelberg Historical Society.
Students learned about wampum and its significance in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. They learned about the exchanging of wampum at the end of a parley between the indigenous people and European nations in North America during the 18th century. They thought about symbols, colors, and peace between peoples of our nation. Students were then challenged to create a wampum belt that would signify their promise to show unity, peace, respect, and empathy to all people of our nation or the world.
Students learn about cultural differences between the Native Americans and Europeans. We learned that differences in culture does not make one group superior to the other. It can lead to clashes based on preconceived ideas, prejudices, and goals, but also lead to opportunities of cooperation and learning. What path will the Natives and Europeans take?
Team Lynx archeologists went to work today observing and collecting data to determine the type and age of Native American projectile points found in Pennsylvania.
2021 As we reach the 20th anniversary of 9/11, my students reflected on the days following those tragic events of September 11, 2001. We discussed the contagious unity of our people. How we stood in solidarity to rise above and combat terrorism. Today we took a pledge to engage in acts of kindness, and give words of encouragement to each other in memory of those who lost their lives and those who fought to protect us. We will never forget. #UnitedNotDivided
2022 Northwestern Lehigh Middle School received funding from the Museum of the American Revolution to attend a personal live-streamed virtual tour of General George Washington's war tent. They learned about the symbolism this tent held for his army and the significance of their fight for independence.
2016 Mr. Bachman came to our classroom with lots of information and artifacts that he found on his archaeological digs in our local area of Pennsylvania.
2016 Students on teams Lynx and Visionaries heard the military experiences and stories of our local veterans, Mr. W. Dellicker (U.S. Air Force), Mr. K. Dellicker (U.S. Air Force), Mr. A. Stirba (U.S. Army), and Mr. C. Smith (U.S. Navy)
Students were challenged to create a boat ("trade vessel") design that would hold the most weight in pennies ("trade goods"). The catch? Only 4 paper cups, 10 straws, 12 inches of plastic wrap, and 10 inches of packaging tape were allowed in the design!
Students studied the art of calligraphy and cursive writing. Using the elements learned in class, they were challenged to write their selected congressional delegate's name using parchment paper, a quill, and ink well. It's much harder than you think!
