According to the survey:
75% of commuters proposed that scheduling more services was an effective solution towards solving overcrowding and delays.
Around 14% of commuters proposed that constructing more service stations and centres would solve accessibility issues.
7% of commuters proposed to increase the capacity of transport
Increasing transport capacity can be achieved by adding additional seats and areas. For instance, creating more double-decker buses would accommodate twice the amount of passengers of a regular bus. Similarly, implementing articulated buses would also double the passenger capacity.
For railway services, the metro and trains can also be fitted with more space for commuters. An example is the existing double-decker trains across Western Sydney, allowing for significantly more passengers. By adding additional carriages to railway services or introducing double-decker carriages for the Metro, space can be maximised completely by utilising the vertical space.
Transport NSW can implement a system in which everyday traffic is observed and analysed to infer whether additional bus services are needed or need to be arriving earlier than the scheduled time. As a result, a new role would need to be established: a traffic analyst. If heavy traffic on roads is observed by a traffic analyst, buses can be notified to leave earlier than expected. This will resolve long delays and ensure that late buses are kept to a minimum.
Transport Access Sites
Building more stops for bus routes, allowing people to access bus services locally and improving convenience
Constructing new metro and train stations in areas lacking transport. More stations would allow commuters to have access to bus and railway services, with numerous bus routes all interconnecting at stations.
(Example: Rouse Hill Town Centre)
Constructing Public Facilities
Implementing centres or malls would benefit numerous communities in suburbs in and outside of the Hills District. By constructing more facilities and amenities in areas with an absence of availability of them, residents will no longer have to travel farther distances. It will provide access to a variety of facilities and amenities including supermarkets, retail stores, gyms, sports centres, restaurants, cinemas and medical facilities. Ultimately, more facilities near people will resolve overcrowding of transport and imrprove accessibility.
Increasing the frequency of services will allow for more transport to accommodate for more commuters in fixed intervals. Ultimately, this will solve overcrowding. The solutions would be to ensure that:
Buses arrive every 5-10 minutes by hiring new bus drivers
Trains arrive every 10-15 minutes
Metro services arrive every 5-7 minutes
Additionally, creating more buses, metros and trains would allow for more frequent scheduling.
Peak Hours
Considering busy times in the morning and evening, more buses can be specifically scheduled to accommodate for a large amount of people. For instance, generally, students and workers utilise transport between 6-8 AM with schools starting at around 8:30 AM, and work starting at 9 AM. The problem of overcrowding can be resolved by targeting specific dates or even events to schedule more services.
