Key Club is one of the most popular after school clubs offered in high schools around the world. Over one million active members in Key Club International volunteer throughout their school year to further benefit and uprise their community. High schools in the 28th division for Key Club attended a Regional Training Conference that reflected upon their school spirit and workmanship.
Northwest CTA attended the Regional Training Conference during Nevada Day weekend at Green Valley High School. The high school placed second in the West Division after participating in the 12 hour conference.
There was not only limited space within the property for the spirit battles between the schools but the dance that was scheduled for the later times during the conference resulted in an overcrowded sector. Although the dance was not mandatory, it was visited by almost 70 percent of the attendees of the conference. During the dance, a giant mosh pit with inner circles developed in the middle regions of the quad.
A member of the Northwest Key Club, Jaynie Jurado, said, “I saw girls faint and get pushed around by multiple groups of people. I also saw some guys get kneed in the face by the same people over and over again without them noticing. Most of the people who were in the mosh pit actually got hurt because of how crowded it was. The mosh pit kind of scared me and I really didn’t want to end up in the middle.”
Many personal items got lost in the crowded circle due to the limited space provided by Green Valley High School. Another Northwest Key Club member, Maddie O’neal, stated, “My phone was knocked out of my hand and on to the floor of the mosh pit. I started yelling at the people in front of me to try to get them to stop stepping on my phone. I found it five minutes later during a water break.”
The Regional Training Conference was an overall perfect conference that built friendships and memories despite some crucial moments. Competitors from across the valley all agree they had a great time, but next year, they may have to create better outlines of plans before developing mosh pits in the quad.
