Frequently Asked Questions
Peer models are between the ages of 3 and 5 (not eligible for kindergarten) and reside within the boundaries of the Clark County School District. Peer models who are not enrolled in a preschool will take priority over students who attend a preschool in another non-CCSD location.
Children eligible to be peer models are selected through a lottery system. A pre-screener will be completed by parents. If there are developmental concerns, a teacher will contact the parent to discuss concerns. Peer models must display developmental skills appropriate for their age within the Early Childhood Special Education classroom.
Consistent attendance is imperative. A child must separate from the parent or caretaker without difficulty and must be toilet trained. Peer models demonstrate age-appropriate developmental skills and behaviors within a classroom environment. The classroom makeup is 50% Special Education students and 50% peer models. As a peer model, a child is expected to demonstrate appropriate behaviors in the hopes that the children with special needs will learn from them. All children learn to work and play with others who have differing abilities.
Peer models are provided with a structured, well-rounded, developmentally appropriate preschool program guided by Nevada PreK standards. An approved preschool curriculum is used to expose peers to a variety of creative preschool activities that will provide them the opportunity to learn the pre-academic, social and behavioral skills necessary to prepare them for kindergarten. Parents will receive a report three times a year showing their child's developmental progress.
