A 30-second Super Bowl ad cost $6.5 million dollars in 2022, according to Statistica. The number this year is projected to be near $7 million. In 2022, NBC, who hosted the Super Bowl, made $578.36 million dollars from in-game advertising alone, according to NBC news. Are the commercial slots companies pay for worth it?
Super Bowl ads are not average commercials. In the Super Bowl, advertisers have to make commercials the absolute best they can. This year's Super Bowl was on February 12th at 3:30pm. The Kansas City Chiefs played the Philadelphia Eagles. A lot of people watch the Super Bowl on television because they are interested in the game or the commercials.
Statistics from CNN news show that 100 million people watch it, and 27% say they tune it just to watch commercials. This is because the commercials are basically mini movies. “They are very funny and appealing,” Derek Knight, 8th grade, said. A lot of viewership on ads helps business.

Tens of millions of people having viewership on ads will help spread brand awareness. Previous research from the University of Minnesota shows that there is not an immediate boost in sales after the Super Bowl, but there is a spike in online searches. With so many people watching, brand awareness spreads faster. “I watched some commercials, and I searched up the products that looked cool,” Cade Konishi, 8th grade, said. Super Bowl commercials help brands develop popularity for a huge price.
Commercials can also be extremely boring for some people. A lot of people skip the commercials. “I usually skip commercials even though some of them can be interesting. I would rather do something else other than watch commercials,” said Konishi. Ads and commercials are going to be skipped over by people because of time. For example, The Farmer’s Dog Commercial-Forever was said to be the number one Super Bowl commercial of 2023 by USA today newspaper. It was a story about a girl and her dog living their whole lives together, and loving each other. For some people, it was an extremely touching commercial.
Overall, Super Bowl commercials can be worth the cost. Each commercial gains tens or hundreds of millions of users, and even though it has a high cost, it is extremely beneficial for the company who bought the commercial.
