In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Nick Bottom is transformed when Robin Goodfellow gives him the head of a donkey. While this is a literal transformation, it can be argued that the experience with the fairies also transforms the other characters. After the events in the forest, Nick Bottom’s head is transformed back and the magic of the love potion is removed. But how do you think that these events will still transform characters like Nick Bottom, Lysander, Hermia, Demetrius, or Helena? How does the effect of these changes reflect the way that our own lives transform when we go through new experiences? Write three paragraphs in which you explain your response.
A symbol is something that represents both itself and something else. We use symbols throughout our culture with things such as stop signs or money. William Shakespeare uses a variety of symbols throughout A Midsummer Night's Dream. In some cases, his symbol is similar to typical cultural meanings for symbols. In other cases, his symbol is different. In a three paragraph essay, write a response to the following points:
In Act I of a Midsummer night's dream, both Lysander and Helena give speeches about the nature of love. Lysander claims that love is "Momentary as a sound, swift as a shadow, short as any dream, brief as the lightning in the collied night." Helena says that "Things base and vile, holding no quantity, Love can transpose to form and dignity. Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind, and therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." In a three paragraph essay, write a response to the following points.
1. Choose one of the speeches and explain what the character means in their explanation of Love.
2. Decide whether you agree or disagree with the argument that character is making.
3. Write a rebuttal to a strong counterclaim against the argument you are presenting.
