To be selected as an ensemble member of this prestigious group, you must audition in late Sept/Early Oct. Auditions are typically in the format of a scale, etude, and excerpt. Scales vary every year. Etudes are from the etude books on the Supply Information page under Concert Orchestra. Excerpts are directly from the pieces that the group will perform. Once a student gets into the ensemble, they receive their sheet music and will be required to attend rehearsals. These are typically on Tuesdays from 6-8 PM. The week of the concert (This year it will be Nov 14), there will be two evening rehearsals, as well as an all-day rehearsal at UNLV on Friday before the concert. This absence is excused and marked as ASA in IC, as it is a district event. Any student to make it into this ensemble represents our Orchestra with immense pride.
This event is much like a Festival, in that there is a performance, a judge, and ratings. Students are to select a solo to perform, or a piece to play with a small ensemble. If the student/ensemble receives a Superior rating, they get a medal with blue ribbon.

The CCSD sponsors and hosts a District Festival in the spring semester for the top MS ensembles at every school. This event typically occurs in March. The ensembles perform on stage and are scored by judges at either UNLV Ham Hall or in an Las Vegas Academy of the Arts theater. Judges are brought in from out of state to rate the orchestras. If the Philharmonic orchestra earns a Superior rating, they receive a Superior Plaque to hang on the wall in the Mannion Orchestra room. It is their legacy.
The Nevada chapter of America String Teachers hosts a concert in the spring semester that is for students who may benefit from a Festival experience, but are not in the top ensemble at their school. This is typically held at Clark HS. If a group earns a Superior rating, they receive a Superior Plaque to hang on the wall in the Mannion Orchestra room. It is their legacy.

A day to celebrate all violinists in CCSD. There is a registration packet that is released about 3 weeks prior. There are specific technique classes, ensemble classes, as well as a master class. Students will specify their desired technique class and register by returning the form to Ms. Munoz. Students receive a shirt especially designed for this event, as well as pizza for lunch. They will learn a plethora of violin-specific pedagogy, watch a guest violinist perform, and perform in an all violin ability-based ensemble on stage at the end of the event. It is always lots of fun. I highly recommend this once a year event to all violinists!
