Each week, students have the opportunity to deposit money into a real bank account. They can deposit as little as one penny. If they would like to deposit an amount larger than $20, they must have a parent/guardian signature on the deposit slip. The students bank account follows them through Hollingsworth. At the 5th grade promotion ceremony, students are given a check for the amount they've saved. If a child is unenrolled from Hollingsworth before completing 5th grade, they can fill out paperwork in the office to withdraw the money.
Each week, our class receives a different fresh fruit and vegetable to try. The selection varies each week and includes things such as pineapples, grapes, bell peppers, and green beans. The program allows students to try new healthy food options. Students always have the option to turn down a food item if they would like.
Our school uses the iReady program school wide to help students reach grade level and to challenge students at grade level. At the beginning of the year, students take a diagnostic test in both reading and math. The test determines how students are performing in each subject. Then it creates a learning path for each child based on their specific needs. Students get lessons in areas of need. Each day, students are given 30 minutes of time to work on iReady for reading or math. Students take the diagnostic test again in the middle of the year and at the end of the year to see their progress. Students and parents can check their test results on iReady or My Education Data.
Our school is very fortunate to have a beautiful garden in our playground! Each week, a farmer from the Green Our Planet program comes to work with classes to maintain our garden. Our class gets to visit the garden for lessons with the farmer a few times each year. Students are also able to spend time in the garden each day at recess. With supervision, students are able to sample food items grown in the garden and sometimes even bring these items home to share with family!
Junior Coaches help out at recess. They lead cheers and help run the games each day. Sometimes, Junior Coaches also help out at recess for younger grade levels. This program allows students to be leaders and good role models for other students in the building. Interested students can apply with Coach Miller. *Occasional after school trainings are required.
Hollingsworth has tutoring after school from 2:30 to 4:00 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursdays. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are for homework help and additional practice, primarily in reading and math. Thursdays are "Explo Days" where students sign up for an exploration class in a special topic they are interested in. Students pick one explo class per semester. Students must be invited to participate in the tutoring program. If you are interested in your student attending, you may contact the office for eligibility.
