Students' scores on the standardized ability tests administered by the GATE teacher determine placement into the Gifted program in CCSD. Students must score in the 98th percentile or higher or accumulate 15 matrix points to be identified as Gifted. Students in the Tags program scored in the 90th percentile or above. These students are thinking at much higher levels than their peers and have an advanced capacity to learn and apply what they have learned.
The U.S Department of Education says...
"Gifted learners are children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment."
So why does this matter?
Gifted students need to understand who they are, why they are different from their peers, and how to use their strengths and overcome their weaknesses to be successful in school and in life. This helps them build their self-esteem.
Gifted students need time with like-minded peers. This allows them to talk with, play games, collaborate, and discuss concepts with those who think at the same level. This helps students understand that they are not alone and it allows them to express their ideas and get feedback and other's perspectives.
Gifted students need to be challenged. This builds perseverance and a growth mindset. Students who only are presented with topics and activities that are "easy" will struggle when faced with a challenge.
Gifted students need to build their thinking skills. They are already thinking at a higher level, however, do they understand the different types of thinking and how to use them to be more successful in school and in life? In GATE we build creative thinking skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills so our students go on with the tools to continue thinking at higher levels and to work to their fullest potential. Gifted students are our change- makers and innovators!
Gifted students need to think with depth and complexity and to think like the experts in the field they are studying.
All of these needs are met during the GATE class to help develop your child's gifts and talents!
