FRIENDS!
MIA SARRAGA ORTIZ
I had the opportunity to interview friends in each grade. I asked each of the groups two questions– one being, “How did you two meet?” and the other being “What is your favorite memory together that happened at school?” These are their funny and remarkable replies.
Lundyn Cortez and Genesis Worthen - Freshmen
Two weeks into school when Student Council started, two freshmen named Lundyn and Genesis met. They found out they had a lot in common. They still say they’re good students despite their goofiness and do not easily get distracted. Now, Lundyn and Genesis love being together. One time, StuCo. had to go to the gym for the first time. Three days into knowing Genesis at the gym, Genesis did a backflip. Lundyn was shocked, laughing with Genesis and having a great time.
Josh Swift and Miles - Sophomores
Josh Swift and Miles are sophomores who met when there was nowhere else to sit or go. However, over time, the two began talking more and more while Miles opened up. Now, their relationship is inseparable. Their favorite memory is when Miles got a girlfriend; he was completely casual and Josh was shocked. However., both ended up laughing about it. The two still talk about it and get to make jokes, especially Josh. He is still in pure disbelief.
Kai Walker and Evon Wingfield - Juniors
Evon Wingfield and Kai Walker are now juniors who met during their freshman year, becoming close friends. Evon began talking to someone of interest and learned about Kai, slowly becoming great friends. Kai agreed with Evon on their favorite memory at school together. They explained how it was one of the first times on 911 Dispatch comms. Due to preparing a booth section to take calls on, they had fun. Despite the stress, Kai helped Evon manage and cool down with a selfie of them wearing their headphones, logged as a forever memory.
Luis Matias and Michael Rivera - Seniors
Luis and Michael are seniors who knew each other in middle school, officially meeting during freshman PE. Michael confronted Luis first, apparently in the locker room, awkwardly asking if Luis went to the same middle school. According to Luis, it was weird back then, now hilarious. Back to the present, after a long meeting at Sol, Michael and Luis were able to unwind on the bus, creating their favorite memory together at school. They were talking about “stupid things.” After a little bit of talking, the vibe changed and got more sentimental. Both are very appreciative of each other.
FINDING STABILITY
AMY ALAVEZ
I had the pleasure of interviewing several of our students at Veterans Tribute Career and Technical Academy to ask about how good they are at balancing their personal and academic lives. Their responses were based on their class schedules and after-school activities.
Sandul Aththanayaka - Freshman
Volleyball player, student council participant, and scholar, Sandul Aththanayaka is a freshman here at Veterans Tribute who has dedicated much of his time investing in his education while finding the means to balance his life outside of school. Sandul decided to fill up his freshman-year schedule with honors classes. Prideful of the work he has accomplished, Sandul sees the commonality of middle school and high school, the only difference is the workload. Sandul believes he is quite good at balancing his academic and personal life. He does spectacularly well in finding that stability.
Estela Castanon - Sophomore
Estela Castanon takes pride in her academics, with a schedule full of Honors and AP classes she often has to make sacrifices to get her work done before a deadline. Outside of school, she finds herself occupying much of her time hanging out with friends and watching movies. Estela also uses her spare time to participate in after-school activities such as Skills USA and Archery. She feels her new enrollment in AP classes means more is expected of her. Even then, Estela certainly believes she does an excellent job balancing her life academically and personally.
Alondra Bernal - Junior
Double majoring often appears to be incredibly difficult to balance to the common eye, but Junior, Alondra Bernal, finds stability between her two majors and her full school schedule. Alondra is currently majoring in Forensics and Law enforcement. Her core classes consist of English 11, U.S. History, Algebra 2, and Geo-Science Honors. Not to mention, Alondra is currently taking AP Spanish and Publications. Outside of school Alondra often finds her evenings occupied with helping her mom take care of kids before beginning her school work. Even with an incredibly eventful and busy day, Alondra feels she does a fine job finding the balance between her personal life and her academic life.
Magaly Martinez - Senior
Senior Magaly Martinez brilliantly represents an ideal senior year. While continuously finding ways best to balance her academic life and her personal life, she manages to keep a positive attitude. Magaly is currently taking five classes consisting of Dispatch, AP Government, English, and Student Council. In her free time, Magaly spends most of her time working but finds the time to volunteer and hang out with friends. Magaly finds that she does well at balancing her personal life and academic life. The key, she believes, is great time management.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT WITH SPORTS
OLIVER HERNANDEZ
I enjoyed interviewing the following students: Kevin Armando Camacho, Caleb Barraza, Colton Elliott, and Alan Serrano. These are all students at Veterans Tribute and I interviewed them on what sports they would like to see at this school. I also asked them what sports they currently play as well as what they would like to play.
Alan Serrano - Freshman
Alan says that he plays soccer and at the moment, his favorite soccer team is F.C Barcelona from Spain. A sport that Alan wants to try is baseball. He wants to try this sport because it looks like fun. Alan also wants to play this sport to see if his eye and hand coordination is good. He believes that the sport that would be popular among his classmates is soccer. Alan states this not just because he is good at soccer, but because he sees many people wearing jerseys during spirit weeks.
Caleb Barraza - Sophomore
Caleb Barraza says that he plays basketball and football. He explains that he just started playing both of these sports. A sport that Caleb said he has always wanted to do is track and field. He wants to try track and field because he is tall and thinks it would give him an advantage due to his long legs. A sport that Caleb believes would be popular among his classmates is basketball because he has lots of friends at this school who already play.
Kevin Monarrez - Junior
Kevin Armando Monarrez Camacho is a wonderful student here at Veterans Tribute CTA. He plays basketball, American football, soccer, and tennis. He says he wants to try wrestling and volleyball to test his strength. Kevin wants to try volleyball because it seems interesting and satisfying when points are scored He thinks tennis would be the most popular sport among his classmates because it is accessible and requires minimal skill.
Colton Elliott - Senior
Colton Elliott does not play any sports but enjoys watching American Football and hockey. He prefers to watch college football rather than the NFL. His favorite team is the Boise State Broncos and his favorite hockey team is the Golden Knights. He would want to try and play American football and he would want to play the position of running back. He would also want to try out boxing. He finds it to be an amazing workout he could do while also learning how to defend himself. Colton believes soccer would be the best sport for this school because he has many friends who play soccer.
LIFE AFTER SCHOOL
BRANDON SIMON
I had the opportunity to interview the students at Veterans Tribute on their lives after school. Eduardo, Joshua, Erinn, and Omar were kind enough to let me interview them on my questions. I asked them first– “What are the hobbies you do after school?” Next, I asked, “Do you have any after-school clubs?” Lastly, I asked, “What do you look forward to at the end of the school day?” Their responses were interesting and fun.
Omar Sandavol- Freshman
Omar Sandavol is in his first year at Veterans Tribute and was kind enough to let me interview him. He goes to the park to play basketball as a hobby after school. Omar is not involved in after-school clubs because even though he wants to join a club, his parents will not pick him up after school. He looks forward to his last-period class. Omar mostly relaxes at his house and plays video games for fun. However, other than that, Omar has nothing else to do.
Erin Hales- Sophomore
Erin Lynn is a remarkable sophomore who attends Veterans Tribute. She took the time to speak with me about her after-school activities. Erin likes to play sports as a hobby after school. An afterschool club she attends is HOSA, a club that focuses on medical services. She mainly does CPR. Erin looks forward to going to sleep after a tiring day of school. Later in the day, Erin likes to sleep, call her friends, and do homework. She has also practiced basketball.
Joshua Narcisco - Junior
Joshua was kind enough to let me interview him. He is a Junior at Veterans Tribute ready for next year and tired of this year. His after-school hobbies include boxing, soccer, and going for runs. He describes that the run's breeze helps him relax, making it his favorite. He has no after-school club activities because he would rather go to church. He looks forward to bettering himself each day by meditating. Joshua enjoys having conversations with his friends on any subject.
Eduardo Perdomo - Senior
I had the pleasure of interviewing Eduardo, a Senior at Veterans Tribute. He likes to play soccer after school as a fun hobby/activity. Eduardo does not participate in after-school activities because soccer is his passion and takes most of his time. He even explains how his personality is “basically soccer.” Eduardo likes soccer because he grew up in a country where you live and breathe soccer–El Salvador. Eduardo looks forward to playing soccer every day. Aside from soccer, Eduardo likes just to write, making it his other favorite hobby.
