MARIAH THE SCIENTIST
Real Name: Mariah Amani Buckles, stage name: Mariah the Scientist; was born in Atlanta, Georgia on October 27, 1997. Her name derives from her love of science. She grew up listening to various genres of music such as hip-hop, soul, R&B, and jazz. She had a huge passion for creating music, which is why she started making music at an early age. Mariah discovered singing when she joined her elementary school chorus. As soon as she graduated from Southwest DeKalb High School, she started to pursue music full-time and began releasing her own tracks, and she moved to New York City. Even though she attended St. John’s University on a biology scholarship, and had hopes of becoming a pediatric anesthesiologist, that never stopped her love for music. She realized that music was her top priority at the time, so she ended up dropping out.

LINKIN PARK'S SUDDEN REVIVAL - WHY SUCH A STIR?
Spanos, Brittany. “Chester Bennington’s Son Slams Linkin Park’s New Lineup: ‘We Trusted You to Be the Bigger Better Person.’” Rolling Stone, 9 Sept. 2024,
Linkin Park is, without a doubt one of the greatest rock bands ever. Of course, you don't have to mess with their music but they have the accolades to back up their status as one of the greats. With 26 Awards and 42 Nominations in events like the Grammys, MTV Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, and iHeart Music Awards they are clearly an accomplished band. They ruled the 2000s with their Nu-Metal and Rap Rock aspects and style which contributed to numerous trends and even defined the fashion of that era. The band was only going up and sure, some of their newer albums didn’t hit as hard as the flawless “Hybrid Theory” and “Meteroa” but they still dropped some decent stuff that reinforced their status of the kings of the 2000s. Unfortunately, in 2017, they lost their lead singer, Chester Bennington to suicide. This devastated everyone, including my only 10-year-old self who pretty much only listened to Linkin Park and other bands like them.
On a personal note, I attribute much of my style and who I am as a person to Chester Bennington and Linkin Park as a whole since I was very young. (I had a mohawk throughout most of elementary since I thought Chester’s was the sickest in the “Papercut” music video). After this somber situation that left only grief, Linkin Park went on an indefinite hiatus until 2024. They released a few things here and there that were mostly archived songs with Chester’s vocals that weren't previously released. Now in 2024, they have made a full comeback with a new lead vocalist. Chester’s successor is Emily Armstrong, lead singer of Dead Sara, a much more lowkey band than Linkin Park. This end to their hiatus and new singer has brought mixed opinions by the fanbase with some thinking that Emily Armstrong is a good fit for the band and fills in Chester’s shoes while others think someone else needed to be picked or the band shouldn't have even came back at all.

Grow, Kory. “Chester Bennington’s Mom: ‘I Feel Betrayed’ by Linkin Park.” Rolling Stone, 19 Sept. 2024
With Emily Armstrong at the helm as lead vocalist, Linkin Park is set to “explore new musical directions while honoring Chester Bennington’s memory.” As a long-time fan, I think she is just okay. Is she a bad vocalist? Not at all! I honestly think she has great vocal talent and a very recognizable and catchy voice. Her work with Dead Sara produced some very good tunes that I listen to from time to time. The real question is: Is she good for Linkin Park? I don't think so. To give her credit where it's due, she has TREMENDOUS shoes to fill as Chester Bennington was a one-of-a-kind vocalist that no one can truly embody. I understand that just as any true Linkin Park fan should, but I still have issues with her performances so far. Emily Armstrong’s voice just doesn't give that same "vibe" as Linkin Park and it honestly just sounds like a tribute band. (There is a tribute band of Linkin Park called Hybrid Theory, and the lead singer looks and sounds just like Chester.) Her live performances are decent but fall short in some aspects. Such as how Chester Bennington had a notorious 17-second scream on the song “Given Up” which he did often when performing. I've yet to see Emily even do half that with her scream on Given Up. I think Emily does an overall decent job as the new lead singer but, I think Linkin Park could've chosen someone better.
Many people thought Amy Lee of Evanescence would be the successor to Chester, although she is undoubtedly one of the most talented vocalists ever. She has more of a mezzo-soprano voice which doesn't cover the insane screams and vocal frying of Linkin Park’s songs. Could she master those? Without a doubt, she already has shown skill in vocal frying on the song Tourniquet by Evanescence. However, many fans think that putting that much strain on her voice is needed for a lot of Linkin Park’s songs may be taxing and impact the condition of Amy Lee’s voice. Thus stating that she may not be a good fit purely because she should preserve her voice. I agree that she should refrain from doing this to maintain her amazing voice but would it be bad for her to join Linkin Park? Absolutely! But it was just always unlikely to happen as it's not field and could impact her voice as doing those certain vocals has to other seriously talented vocalists. Chino Moreno of the Deftones is a good example of this effect and for a good decade from 2010-2020 his voice in a live setting, was just a former shell of what it used to be. Albeit now he's definitely given his voice a proper recovery and he's been back and better than ever. Other than the fact the new singer has already been found, another reason that Amy Lee being the new Linkin Park singer was impossible is that she announced, that she had no part in Linkin Park’s revival. Amy Lee being the new singer would be the literal greatest thing ever and I think most agree, but it was, unfortunately, unlikely to ever happen.
“Amy Lee.” Simple English Wikipedia, the Free Encyclopedia, 21 Aug. 2024. Wikipedia,
Penner, Scott. Deryck Whibley at the Ottawa Bluesfest in 2003. 7 July 2003. originally posted to Flickr as Sum 41, Wikimedia Commons,
Personally, I think an amazing option for the new singer would be Deryck Whibley of Sum 41. Now, he also stated before the new singer for Linkin Park was revealed that he was not going to be the successor to Chester, with him exactly stating that “I am not joining Oasis…or Linkin Park” (Oasis being another band that has been going through a tough situation of members for a long time).
I still think he could have been a better choice. He has that sort of style, both aesthetically and with his vocals, that fits that 2000s “vibe” Linkin Park had. His vocal style is unique on his own but has shown it can be reminiscent of Chester’s and this was demonstrated when he played "Faint" by Linkin Park. On one of Sum 41’s tours where they actually brought out Mike Shinoda, the other lead singer of Linkin Park (and sometimes guitarist and keyboardist) for the song and sang it together. It was an amazing display and really felt like a tribute to Chester Bennington after only playing one song.
Emily Armstrong has been a hot topic for discussion as she has also been under fire a lot lately due to having accusations of being associated with the Church of Scientology and supporting a convict named Danny Masterson in court. Her status as not just a musician but as a public figure is being challenged tremendously, and it is not helping her with all the criticism (and just straight-up hate) that has been being thrown at her already.
And now, we can't change reality and the decision has already been made of who is to succeed Chester and not everyone may agree on whether or not the right choice was made but I think Linkin Park fans (including myself) should be grateful to a certain degree that Linkin Park is back. (But honestly.....probably not better than ever.)
