Your Military Job Can Depend On Your ASVAB Test Score

What is the ASVAB?   The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a heavily researched and well-respected aptitude test developed by the Department of Defense. It measures a young adult's strengths and potential for success in military training.

Do you have to take the ASVAB in order to enlist in the military?  Yes

How is the ASVAB exam broken up? The ASVAB is broken down into nine sections. They are Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), Assembling Objects (AO), Auto and Shop Information (AS), Electronics Information (EI), General Science (GS), Mathematics Knowledge (MK), Mechanical Comprehension (MC), Paragraph Comprehension (PC), and Word Knowledge (WK).

What is the scoring range and how does that impact what military jobs that I can do?The scoring range on the ASVAB is between 1-99.  The minimum passing score to enlist in the military is a 31 but different branches of the military may have different requirements.  Here's a link to see what the minimum scores are for each branch of the military and how ASVAB test scores impact what jobs you can qualify for: https://www.military.com/join-armed-forces/asvab/asvab-scores-and-military-jobs.html

U.S. Merchant Marine Academy

Alumni Association and Foundation

The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), one of the five federal service academies that include West Point, Annapolis, Air Force, and Coast Guard academies, has extended the deadline to complete applications for the Class of 2026 to Feb. 28.

Federal service academies are not for everyone but we encourage those students looking to serve their country and accept a demanding academic schedule to complete their application before Feb 28. Like all federal service academies, there is no application fee for USMMA.

Our rigorous four-year academic program is highlighted by the Academy’s Sea Year experience. Through this unique program, every student gains real-world leadership experience working aboard commercial ships sailing to ports around the world during three academic terms. Our students pursue a degree in one of five majors offered through two Academic Departments: Marine Engineering and Marine Transportation. Students receive full tuition, room and board, and books at no cost.

I have also included our latest digital View Book. It highlights Midshipman life, sports, sailing, academic programs and majors, the unique year at sea training, and more. Please share this with your students interested in a unique educational opportunity at a federal service academy.

Graduates of the United States Merchant Marine Academy earn a Bachelor of Science degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license, and a commission in the United States Armed Forces. Our graduates have an option to work as ship’s officers in the United States maritime industry or serve as commissioned officers on active duty in any branch of service.

More information about the Academy can be found here.
