Canadian Human Rights Act: act outlining human rights standards for federal government, its agencies, and industries regulated by federal government
capital offence: crime punishable by death in another country
conciliation: bringing conflicting parties to a resolution of their differences...conciliator takes direct role in suggesting solutions
discrimination: treating people unfairly or unequally on the basis of race, religion, gender, ability, etc.
extradition: being sent back to another jurisdiction to face criminal charges there
freedom: being able to live life without being hampered or frustrated
harassment: persistent behaviour that violates the victim’s human rights
human rights: basic rights that all people have, simply because they’re human
human rights codes: legal documents that prevent people from prohibited discrimination
jurisdiction: to have authority over something, including the ability to make and enforce laws in that area
mediation: intervention between conflicting parties that promotes compromise towards settlement of the dispute...mediator does not suggest solutions, but helps parties resolve themselves
prejudice: judgment made of a person simply because of their membership in a group
rights: legal, moral, or social entitlements that are due all people
sexual harassment: behaviour of a sexual nature that violates a person’s human rights
stereotyping: making a generalized statement about an entire group of people
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: document suggesting fundamental human rights available to all people in the world
