About   project

About the project

This project will be the first training course for Masters in Food Technologies at the National University of Food Technologies, which will introduce the best practices of the European Union on the safe use of food additives and their effective use in production. Conducting summer schools will facilitate the dissemination of knowledge of European Union policy to the non-academic community. All interested persons will have access to additional course materials through the online course and the project website.

The main objective

The main objective of the Module is to focus on European Union procedures and practices for the production of food additives and their use in safe quantities in the production of foodstuffs, for monitoring their use and for their implementation in Ukraine.

The main tasks

The main objectives of the Module are to raise students' awareness of key EU policy issues regarding the use of food additives in various food industries and to transform knowledge into practical approaches to quality control and their safe use, to determine their quality and safety, labeling, and control of their content in products, best practices for improving product quality and food production efficiency.

Perspectives

One of the important perspectives of the module is to facilitate the cooperation of researchers from Ukraine and the European Union, which will provide project participants with relevant knowledge for efficient food production and positive changes in the development of food industry in order to bring food quality and safety closer to European standards.

Due to the Ukrainian-European Association Agreement, Ukraine has approved the Comprehensive Implementation Strategy of Chapter IV (Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures) of Title IV, “Trade and Trade-Related Matters” of this Agreement. This will allow Ukraine to approximate the standards of food production, the use of food additives and to develop the policy of regulating their production, use, quality control and labeling to European Union standards. Nowadays, the use of food additives in Ukraine is regulated by EU regulations. The Jean Monnet module is intended to better understanding the European Union policy on the production of food additives and to steer all issues regarding their use. The module includes a course "Regulation of the use of food additives in different food technologies and harmonization of European regulations in Ukraine on the path of European integration", summer school for politicians, representatives of industrial enterprises and companies, experts, students of various specialties and citizens. Thus, this course will include 48 hours for each academic group and two summer schools of 18 hours each, will include 372 contact hours and will cover about  240 participants during three years of the project.

The module will also provide an important section on practices in the European Union and the control of the content of some food additives in the product, to ensure their safety and to prevent food fraud.

The proposed course will be one of the first in the Master's Program in Food Technologies related to European Integration and will make a huge contribution to deepening knowledge and awareness of European Union policy on the use of food additives among teachers, young scientists, halth officials, policy-makers, students and industry workers thanks to university courses, summer schools, and presentations of Module materials on the site and on social networks.

The measures will stimulate the idea of studying the best practices of the European Union, not only at NUFT but also beyond, and will stimulate European integration in order to improve the production and control of food containing food additives, which is closely linked to trade expansion. The study of materials and activities will be accompanied by active discussion of topical issues in the development and implementation of European Union regulations, which will promote ideas and the introduction of new approaches in the food industry. This will enhance the regional importance of the National University of Food Technologies in initiating open discussions on topical issues regarding the use and labeling of food additives in Ukraine and provide recommendations for their solving, taking into account the best approaches of the European Union countries in these matters.
