Location
Nueva is situated in the heart of Bay Meadows in San Mateo. It's a 5 minute walk from the Hillsdale Caltrain station. It's also really close to El Camino Real, making it easy to travel to from anywhere in the Bay Area. There are plenty of great food options nearby (Hillsdale Mall, Whole Foods Square). We would be happy to give you food recommendations too (email usmun@nuevaschool.org)!
Affordability
Compared to other established high school conferences, which, on average, charge around $30 per delegate, and college-hosted conferences, which charge at least $70, NMUNC is significantly more affordable at around $20 per person. Furthermore, we do NOT charge any delegation (school/group) fees, which may, at other high school and college conferences, amount to hundreds of dollars. Nonetheless, NMUNC promises the same quality at our conference (see other sections) as delegates would see at a well-established college-level conference.
Chairs
Most of our committees are chaired by 3 people instead of 2. We design our committees this way so that assembly is properly facilitated and delegates receive quality feedback. Further, all of our chairs are required to attend rigorous training program over 8 months, in which they are taught and tested on parliamentary procedure, trained on background guide and update paper writing, and finally, have the opportunity to test out their committee with Nueva MUN club members. Through this process, chairs are able to gain a strong understanding of procedure and their topic, as well as, adapt their topic if needed (which will then be announced via the update paper).
At least one of each committee's chairs will be a veteran chair (having chaired at NMUNC or another regional conference before) and all will have had attended several conferences too.
Resources
NMUNC provides a multitude of guides for all delegates. Each committee will provide an extensive background guide which brief delegates on their committee topic. Firstly, we schedule the writing process in the summer so that chairs are able to give their full attention to writing the guide instead of classes. In the fall, the background guides undergo at least 3 rounds of revision by other chairs, and 1 round of review by the secretariat. After the chairs revise their background guide, the paper is published on this website.Â
Provided that there are significant developments to a committee's topic, the chairs will write an update paper detailing such developments to delegates, usually written using sources published after the background guide's publication date. NMUNC is proud to one of the only conferences in the nation that provides these reports (the only other conferences are the National High School Model United Nations Conference (NHSMUN) in New York and Model United Nations of the University of Chicago Conference (MUNUC)).
Finally, we have made our team wiki available for all NMUNC delegates to view. This is an excellent place to know more about MUN, write position papers, make great speeches, and more. While it's always constantly evolving, delegates should feel free to pull tips from it or use any of it's guides at any time.
Quality of feedback
We believe that MUN, at it's core, is an education experience. Quality feedback is one of the most critical components and all of our chairs make an effort to ensure that delegates walk away from our conference with an improved skillset and a better understanding of world that we live in.
Firstly, we guarantee that position papers submitted by the deadline, will be reviewed by at least 3 chairs. The chairs will then give you comprehensive in-line comments, overall feedback, and a rubric assessment of your paper, by the time the conference starts.
We also offer the opportunity for delegates to receive committee feedback at the end of each session, beginning after the second session. Our chairs are trained to ensure that their feedback adapts based on delegates' improvements throughout the conference. Furthermore, the dais would be more than happy to work with you to give you actionable plans for improvement. It's a common complaint, among other conferences, that chairs do not effectively give any feedback. Here at NMUNC we promise that you will NOT have that issue. Note: If delegates prefer a copy of in-conference feedback after the conference is done, the chairs are more than happy to email their feedback to you after the conference.
Crisis Backroom
Crisis Backrooms can be extremely difficult to manage. That's why we assign at least 9 people to manage our each of our crisis committees. 3 of them are the crisis chairs (front room), 5 others are the crisis staffers (back room), and the last one is the crisis director, who is in charge of managing the committee's crisis arc. Our unique crisis structure is designed to ensure that every crisis note gets responded to in an through way, individual crisis arcs are understood, crisis maps are detailed and adaptable, and crisis note cooldowns are reasonable.
