In general:
Aug-October: Getting started, research and prep, some false starts
Nov-Mid-January: Getting on track, work over breaks, potential pivot
Feb-April: Locking in, deadline-driven grind, mild panic
Different types of Questies
Methodical Questie: Someone who decides early and locks in
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Someone who is often bouncing between multiple ideas
Periodical Questie: Someone who knows what they want to do, but time/ability/inclination to work on Quest waxes and wanes
Senior Questie: 12th graders are focused on college apps in the fall semester, so Quest doesn't start until December/January. They're also looking forward to post-Nueva life.
Methodical Questie: Might appreciate material support if their Quest needs certain resources. Also would not appreciate surprise demands on their time that they didn't plan for.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Might appreciate a non-judgmental brainstorm partner, someone to help them get un-stuck or to help them decide what to do next.
Periodical Questie: Might appreciate a gentle, periodic prod. Or perhaps someone to help them get un-stuck and prepare for the next bout of working on Quest.
Senior Questie: Might appreciate some brainstorming about a Quest that carries onto post-high school life.
Methodical Questie: Decides on Quest, submits Quest Proposal, and starts doing research. Blocks out a regular time for working on Quest, or maybe sets a manageable daily or weekly goal
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Brainstorms a bunch of possible Quests, talks to friends about various Quest ideas. Tries some of them to narrow down options, and is still trying to pick between a few by Quest Proposal deadline. Picks 1 to put down as Quest but also holding a few "in reserve".
Periodical Questie: Decides on Quest, and rides the initial a quick burst of initial excitement/energy to do some research and planning. Then sets the project aside for other things.
Senior Questie: Trying to figure out college stuff, angsting about how to boil down their entire life experience into personal statements. Perhaps looking for something to distract them from college apps, and picks up a new hobby by accident.
Due Sep 30th: Quest Proposal
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Works on their Quest. Or maybe their back-up Quest.
Periodical Questie: Remembers around Parent-Teacher Conferences that they do have a Quest, and spends a burst of time working on it, until they hit a snag and put it aside again.
Senior Questie: Continued college app work. My, that scarf that they're stress-knitting is getting long.
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals. Perhaps takes a break for Thanksgiving break.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Stalling out on Quest, but the back-up Quest is cruising along.
Periodical Questie: Finally built up enough procrastination energy to actually ask someone for help on the thing that they were stuck on. Able to do a good bunch of Quest work over Thanksgiving break!
Senior Questie: Forget knitting -- there's no time to do anything, not even hobbies.
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals. Perhaps takes a break for Winter break.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Still stalled out on Quest, but planning on giving Quest idea one final push over Winter break just in case it does work out.
Periodical Questie: Locks in during Winter break, enough done on Quest that it starts to feel like a real thing.
Senior Questie: Starting to actually think about Quest.
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals. If it's a skill-based Quest, starts thinking about final product that can synthesize acquired skills.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Winter break push either works spectacularly, in which case they're locked in, or fails spectacularly, in which case they're pivoting to their back-up Quest idea
Periodical Questie: Picks a bit at the Quest, but mostly focused on getting things prepped for a big push over Februrary break.
Senior Questie: Finally brainstorming Quest, talking to friends about possibility of Group Quest, etc.
Due Jan 31th: Quest Declaration
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Working on Quest now that they've finally locked in.
Periodical Questie: Big push on Quest over Februrary break. Quest now ~75% done!
Senior Questie: Working on Quest (with whimsy)
Methodical Questie: Working on Quest at regular intervals. Quest mostly complete by mid-March. Spends the last 2 weeks preparing for Quest Expo (video, slides, etc)
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Working on Quest, but beset by last minute indecision about whether this is the Quest that they want to present at Quest Expo.
Periodical Questie: Harnessing a lot of last minute panic energy to get Quest over the finish line!
Senior Questie: Working on Quest (with vigor)
Due Mar 15th: Quest Logistics
Due Apr 12th: Quest Video
Methodical Questie: Relaxed, everything is set.
Indecisive/Pivoting Questie: Finally decided on presentation format, possibly trying to find a trifold at the last minute.
Periodical Questie: Putting the finishing touches on the project. Reminding themselves that Quest is about the process, not the product.
Senior Questie: Calm -- they've done Quest 3 times already, have the Quest prep process down to an art.
