About Our Library

The Joseph A. Scungio Library located in Neshannock Elementary School houses over 16,000 items. Included in this collection are books, periodicals and audiovisual items. The library also provides access to eBooks and audiobooks through Sora. Curbside pickup of physical library materials is available to online students. The library also has a cart of 10 iPads. Teachers can check out the iPads for classroom use. Materials are purchased based on academic value and the interest of the students.

The Makerspace in the Neshannock Elementary Library supports STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) learning. It helps students to strengthen their critical thinking, problem solving and communication skills.

The library is open for students to research and book exchange every day from 8:30 A.M. to 3:15 P.M. A computerized circulation system is used. Each student is issued a library card with their personal student ID number. New cards are issued each school year with the students’ current school picture on them. The library cards remain the elementary school library. Students in grades kindergarten through two may borrow one library book. Students in grades three through six are permitted to borrow two library books. All books may be kept for two weeks before being considered overdue. Every effort should be made to return or renew books on or before the due date.

Students in grades K-6 visit the library on a weekly basis with their homeroom class and are able to access the library during scheduled book check times throughout the week. Book check times provide students with an opportunity to exchange their library book(s) outside of their scheduled library class time.

This school library program is designed to enable all students to gain proficiency and independence in areas of reading, speaking, listening, and writing, and to encourage students to appreciate reading as a leisure activity. This program promotes student learning through inquiry-based lessons, collaboration with teachers and by providing resources to support class projects.
