Before the Spaniards (Pre-Colonial)
Long before foreign colonization, Filipinos exhibited remarkable ingenuity suited to their environment. They built the Batad Rice Terraces, carved into mountain slopes by the Ifugao people over 2,000 years ago, utilizing an advanced irrigation system that channels water from mountaintop forests down through stone and mud terraces. Indigenous groups retained and refined weaving techniques using abaca, piña, and cotton.
Patterns and dyes were often symbolic and unique to specific ethnic groups. They wove textiles from piña (pineapple fibers), abaca (Manila hemp), and native cotton, creating clothing and fabrics renowned for their durability and intricate patterns.

Shipbuilding and Navigation
In maritime technology, they crafted balangay boats, large wooden plank boats stitched together with natural fibers, used for coastal trading, inter-island travel, and voyages to neighboring regions such as Borneo and Indonesia, making them integral to regional trade networks. Karakoa warships, used by Visayan warriors, were long, swift vessels designed for naval raids and defense.

For food gathering, indigenous communities used fish traps (bubo) and fish corrals (baklad) made from bamboo and rattan for efficient, sustainable fishing in rivers, lakes, and coastal areas.
BAHAY KUBO
Their houses, bahay kubo, were built from bamboo and nipa palm, elevated on stilts for ventilation and protection against flooding and animals, demonstrating environmental adaptation.
In health and wellness, traditional medicine utilized herbal remedies from native plants, while hilot, a traditional massage and bone-setting practice, served as both healing and preventive care.
