September 3rd 2019: Fall Kickoff Meeting
Our first meeting of fall 2019 will be held at the Science and Research 1 building Room 410 from 6:30pm - 7:30pm. We will officially introduce our new officers, acknowledge our merge with AIPG, and meet our faculty advisor Dr. Regina Capuano. We will also discuss career building strategies and upcoming events.

Hydro-Geo Workshop is an educational seminar that benefits aspiring geology, hydrogeology and environmental science students to get hands-on learning experience and build network with professionals in the industry. Environmental Studies Internship at The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center:
Projects include terrestrial, atmospheric and estuarine environmental research. Projects are also offered in environmental education and environmental information management.
Individuals will devote most of their time to a project and content area of particular interest to them.
Selected candidates will receive a stipend of $550.00 per week. Limited on-site dormitory space may be available for $105.00 per week.
The specific dates and duration of the internship appointment are arranged between the supervisor and the student. However, internship appointments are generally full time (40 hours per week), 12 to 16 weeks in length, and coincide with the usual academic semesters and summer terms.

University of Virginia Intership Opportunity: They are accepting applications from University of Houston undergraduate and graduate students for the Advanced Computing for Earth Sciences (ACES) summer school/paid internship at UVA in partnership with NASA.

•The program aims to detect and track nonpoint source pollutants (NPS) in lakes and rivers that drain to the Gulf of Mexico and the responsibility of the volunteer is to collect and document data from sampling the water.Certification enables volunteers to collect water quality data from assigned location that meets the requirements of the EPA and TCEQ. Volunteers are trained to perform tests using instruments to collect pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, (TDS) conductivity or salinity, and document field observations.Requirements: visit assigned location and sample water every month for a minimum of 2 years

Bianca Lopez and Jason Ybarra from TCEQ will be sharing what it is like to work at TCEQ. Bianca Lopez is a graduate from the University of Houston with majors in Environmental Systems and Modeling and Geology. She minored in Atmospheric Sciences and Geophysics. She is currently an Environmental Investigator at TCEQ Region 12, Air Division. Jason Ybarra has worked for TCEQ since 1997. He started off as an Environmental Investigator, then became the Waste Work Leader, followed by the Waste Team Leader. He is now the Waste Section Manager.

The AEG student chapter is having a resume workshop Monday March 30th from 1-2 pm. We are having Tiffany Bittings the NSM career counselor help critique and edit resumes.The focus will be on applying for environmental jobs and jobs with government agencies, since that is a strong job market for environmental jobs (compared to oil industry jobs for geology/geophysics).
