New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) sponsors music festivals for students across the state each year. Students can elect to participate in solo and small ensemble festivals to receive adjudication comments and a rating from certified adjudicators. After participating in a solo festival, student can be nominated to participate in the regional Junior High Area All-State Festival (grades 7-9) or the Senior High Area All-State Festival (grades 10-12). Students performing at the highest level in the solo festivals can be nominated for selection in the Conference All-State Festival held each year in Rochester. Students from our school district are selected each year for participation in all of these festivals in band, orchestra, or choral ensembles.
The Onondaga County Music Educators Association (OCMEA) is an organization that provides music performance opportunities for students across our county as well as valuable professional development for music teachers. OCMEA hosts ensemble festivals for band, orchestra, and chorus each year. Elementary All-County festival is for grades 5 & 6 and students are nominated by their teachers to participate. Students who wish to participate in the Junior High All-County (grades 7-9) and Senior High All-County (grades 10-12) festivals must audition to be selected. Each year, we have students participating in all of these festivals for band, orchestra, and chorus.
OCMEA also awards scholarships to graduating seniors who will be studying music in college.
Symphor!a, Syracuse's professional symphony orchestra, has three youth ensembles that student can audition to participate in. Groups rehearse on Sunday afternoons and perform several concerts throughout the school year. Students get the opportunity to be both coached by and perform side-by-side with Symphor!a musicians.
The CNY Jazz Youth Orchestra is a summer festival open to students by audition. Students work with some of the stop jazz educators in the CNY region and perform a numbers of summer concerts in the community.
