The instrumental band program begins in elementary school in 4th grade. Students participate in small group lessons once a week on a rotational schedule and concert band. Instruments options include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, French horn, baritone, trombone and percussion (snare drum and bells). Students perform in a spring concert.
The middle school band program for grades 5-7 also accepts beginners. Students participate in small group lessons and concert band. New instruments are added including some of the larger, lower-pitched woodwind and brass instruments like bass clarinet, tenor and baritone saxophone, and tuba. Students perform at winter and spring concerts as well as other performances in school. Many students perform at in-house or NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo and small ensemble festivals. The middle school bands also participate in Bandemonium! (combined RRMS/GRMS concert), spring parades and have traveled to competitions such as the Sherburne Band Pageant, Six Flags (Darien Lake) Music Festival and the Seabreeze Amusement Park Music Days.
The junior high and high school band programs are credit-bearing classes in grades 9-12. Students participate in lessons and concert band and perform several concerts throughout the school year. Many students audition for All-County and All-State ensembles and perform at in-house or NYSSMA solo and ensemble festivals. Co-curricular ensembles are also offered.
