Waves Project Update #1 - May 1, 2023
Essential Questions
What is your idea? Why is this idea a good way to represent the concepts of waves? Explain.
My idea is that I will create a tiktok account and post different vdieos to explain each concept. For example, I will create a video describing key terms, the different types of waves, and the characteristics of waves. I think this will be a good way to represent the concepts of waves becasue I will be able to deeply describe waves so everyone can understanfd, and I can icnlude images, and diagrams to help explain waves.
How will you create it? (skills)
I will create these videos by including multiple hand drawn pictures and diagrams, and I will also make some hands on diagrams that I could use to represent both sound waves and ocean waves.
What materials will you need? (include a list)
- Tik Tok
- a phone
- large white board (to draw out diagrams and pictures)
Waves Standards 1 & 2
What is a wave? How are waves produced? Compare and contrast the 2 types of waves.
A wave carries energy that moves through a medium. Waves are produced by a distrubance.
- Transverse wave: disturbance is perpendicular to the direction of the propagation, a transverse wave has crests and troughs, its amplitude is one half the waves height
- Longitudinal wave: disturbance is in the same direction as the propagation, a longitudinal wave has compressions and rarefactions, half of the compression is the amplitude
What is the relationship between f, T, λ, and v of a wave? (conceptual and mathematical)
Frequency: the number of waves per second
Period: number of seconds per wave
Wavelength: the distnace from crest to crest or compression to compression
Velocity: the speed of the wave (measured in meters per second)
In your project how will you show how waves are produced and what waves do?
- In my project, I will show how waves are produced and what waves do becasue I will make hands on diagrams that help show it. For example, I could use a slinky to show how the two types of waves are produced and how they travel through a medium.
In your project how will you illustrate the 2 types of waves?
- In my project, I will illistrate the two tupes of waves by labeling drawings I draw on the white board I have
In your project how will you show the difference between the frequency and period of a wave?
- In my project, I will show the difference between the frequency and period of a wave by creating some type of wave and determing how many waves there are per second (frequency), and then how many seconds per wave (period).
In your project how will you use the mathematical relationship relating wave speed, frequency, and wavelength? v = f λ Create your own mathematical problem relevant to your project. Be sure to use correct units for each concept.
- In my project, I will use my white board to show and explain the different equations and how they all relate to one another. Then, I will create a mathemantical problem to show and explain how to solve it. I will create a seperate video to explain all of the key terms and can include the equations in that video along with a mathematical example.

Project Update #2 - May 24, 2023
Reflection on Waves Standards 1 & 2:
So far in my project, I have created multiple tik tok videos that all explain different concepots in standards 1 and 2. I created videos to expalin what a wave is, the different types of waves, and the characteristics of waves. After receiving feedback on my project, I will continue to improve my tiktok videos and make them as best as they can be.
Waves Standards 3, 4, & 5:
State Standards 3, 4, & 5 and explain how you will demonstrate them in your project:
What are the necessary conditions for a wave to demonstrate interference? What characteristics of the wave change?
interference occurs when two waves travel toward each other, colide, and continue to pass through each other
the resultant amplitude changes
What are the necessary conditions for a wave to demonstrate refraction? What characteristics of the wave change?
Refraction occurs when a wave travels from one medium to another medium
The velocity and waveleghth of the wave changes
What are the necessary conditions for a wave to demonstrate diffraction? What characteristics of the wave change?
Diffraction occurs when a wave travels around or between barriers
As the wave moves through the barrier, the waves chnage their shape and become more circular
In your project how will you show the wave behavior of interference including standing waves? Explain.
In my project, I will explain what interference is and the 2 different types. I will draw diagrams of when the waves would look like (both constructively and destrucitvly) before, during, and after the wave behavior.
I will include standing waves in my project by defining what they are and drawing diagrams to show the different orders.
---> describe what nodes and anti nodes are
In your project how will you show the wave behavior of refraction? Explain and also create your own mathematical problem (Snell's Law for light, sound waves, water waves, etc.) relevant to your project. Be sure to use correct units for each concept.
In my project, I will show refraction by including an example of when a wave refracts. I will draw a diagram to show the normal line and the angle of incidince etc...
I will also incldue a mathematical example using Snell's law and explain it on my white board
In your project how will you show the wave behavior of diffraction? Explain.
I will show diffraction by drawing diagrams that show the barriers and waves passing through them.
