Historic Dorms and Buildings at Ohio State 

My project focuses on the history of Ohio State’s most historic dorms. This project is of interest to the community because many students at Ohio State live in these dorms and call these buildings home during the school year. Therefore, students at Ohio State should care about the history of these historic dorms since it is where they live and call home. The other community this project is of interest to is historians, especially those of Ohio State and even just of college in general. It should be of interest to historians because this project details great historical information, which aligns with the likes of most historians. In addition to this, the purpose of my project is to enlighten students at Ohio State about Ohio State’s most historic dorms and why these dorms are so important. My project will especially enlighten and illustrate the importance of these dorms to those who live in any of the most historic dorms on campus. This will be accomplished by discussing why these remarkable, historic dorms are so important and as to why these historic buildings, including Ohio State’s historic dorms, should be preserved. The issue I am addressing in this project is whether historic buildings including college dorms should be preserved. My position on the issue is that historic buildings, including those on college campuses, should be preserved. I believe that historic buildings and landmarks should be preserved as these buildings serve as a representation of history. For instance, old buildings are witnesses to the aesthetic and cultural history of a certain place, helping to give visitors a sense of place and connection to the past. Therefore, we should protect and preserve these buildings since these historic buildings are a symbol and reminder of the past. Moreover, these buildings provide and have significant educational purposes. Historic buildings can transform and bring to life the education of today’s younger generation. Visiting and being inside any historic building can give a whole new perspective to visitors as well. Rather than just learning about historic, old buildings and monuments in books, such as a school textbook, visiting and exploring any historic building in person is a very different and unique experience. This unique perspective gives the visitor a new outlook on history and the importance of historic buildings as well. For example, taking a tour or just seeing a famous monument/place, such as the Eiffel Tower in person can change a person’s feelings about these types of buildings, monuments, places, etc., such as making a person feel more grateful to experience such a unique opportunity. To summarize, it is a whole new experience to visit one in person instead of just reading about it. This is very true for students attending The Ohio State University as well. Ohio State students can explore numerous historic buildings and dorms on campus as well as even live in some of these historic dorms. Not only is it a unique experience, but students can gain knowledge about Ohio State’s past from these buildings. I believe it is important to learn about the history of Ohio State, especially as a student. Furthermore, I believe that other Ohio State students should want to learn about Ohio State’s history as well. Additionally, I will try to persuade students at Ohio State to care about these historic buildings on campus. I will accomplish this by explaining and detailing why it is both interesting and important to know the background and history of these historic dorms. Also, I will explain and detail the history and experiences of those who lived in these same dorms as current Ohio State students, the history of how these dorms began and who these buildings are named after. Furthermore, the intended audience for my project is Ohio State students as well as historians or those researching the history of Ohio State. My audience is unfamiliar with the issue of whether historic buildings should be preserved, particularly historic college dorms. I will reach them by using some sort of website as a platform to give access to anyone researching this topic or issue. Additionally, I will reach them by using social media. I will use social media specifically to target and grab the attention of Ohio State students since most students of today’s society are on social media. For instance, I could post a link to my project on some sort of social media platform such as Instagram and Facebook, shown down below, to reach my audience.
