You are expected to comport yourself in a respectful manner that supports artistic creativity in this class. You will treat your cast, crew, community, and all policies related to this class with high regard.
FIRST PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
The first group of assignments is intended to introduce you to setting up a shot, introducing a character, movement, and interaction between characters. Each project is to be carried out in an exterior setting when possible. This is to guarantee ample light from the sun. It is important that you gain sufficient technical competence in focus, exposure, and editing through these early projects. I encourage you to pre-visualize your projects with a script and storyboard. Make sure your story has a beginning, middle, and an end.
1: The Shot
2: Continuity
3: Movement
4: Parallel Action
SECOND PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
The second group of assignments will further develop your cinematic language by introducing you to techniques to enhance your story. You will explore different kinds of shots from wides to close-ups and illustrate how each shot type can change the story. You will also be introduced to playing around with elements of time as cinema is a time-based artform. Again, make sure to focus on telling a cohesive story with a beginning, middle, and an end and think about how each shot can enhance the story visually. Again, you will film outside for this project.
5: Character
6: Interaction
7: Close-up
8: Dream
THIRD PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
The third group of assignments will introduce lighting. So far, you’ve only worked outside and in black & white. Starting at this point, you will include color in your projects as every light has direction, intensity, shape, and color. You will also learn that 3-point lighting is not the only type of lighting and that in fact, lighting is used in so many different ways to enhance the story. You will explore how different lighting setups will challenge and amplify your intent. For this project, you are required to film inside with one or more lights.
9: 3-Point Lighting
10: Bounced/Soft/Diffused Lighting
11: Lighting for Movement
12: Special Effects Lighting
FOURTH PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
This group of projects will introduce sound. Until this point, you’ve only had MOS projects, but now, you will be expected to have a full mix that includes sound effects, ambiance, and music (if desired). You are not going to have sync sound, so don’t plan on having any dialogue. You will explore how sound can dictate your visuals and vice versa. Again, this is all about storytelling and how sound can amplify your vision.
13: Activity with Music
14: Sound Effects
15: Voiceover
16: Off-Screen Sound
FIFTH PROJECT ASSIGNMENTS
This is the final project. You will be given an extra week to do these. You may include sync dialogue if you wish.
