Japanese 1 (J1)

Y­­­­ōkoso (Welcome)! J1 is a course for students who are studying Japanese for the first time. This course is designed to give students exposure to fundamental topics and functions as they begin their language study. Students develop language through the five Cs of Communication, Culture, Connections, Comparisons, and Communities. They have opportunities to engage in interpretive, interpersonal and presentational activities in each unit, and employ technology in each mode on a regular basis. In J1, students will focus on the following topics: Greetings & Instructions, Let’s Count, Countries & Nationalities, My Family & Pets, Dates & Events, and Hobbies & Sports. Students in J1 will develop their speed at listening, speaking, reading, and writing/typing in the hiragana and katakana syllabaries, and will begin their study of kanji in accordance with unit requirements.
