District Performing Arts Response - HERE

Band will be conducted consistent with NJDOH, CDC, NJSIAA and NFHS Guidelines.

Playing will occur indoors with the following protocols in place.

  • ALL students will be physically distanced during rehearsals (see photo below, chairs facing forward will only be used for students and percussionists will be located on both sides of the room).

  • Rehearsals will be no longer than 30 minutes.

  • Students will be required to wear a mask at all times (Woodwind and Brass instruments will remove their mask to play their instrument). A blow mask may be created by using a two-ply cloth mask and cutting vertical slits approximately 1.5 inches apart to create a semblance of a fly opening.

  • Students will be given materials to make a homemade instrument mask/bag but there are commercial alternatives available - Click HERE or HERE (NEW) for an online vendor. Elefante Music has some Instrumental Personal Protective Accessories available as well (not on their website).

      • HERE is the plan for brass instrument masking.

      • We plan to use nylon laundry bags with drawstring closures for Woodwind instruments.

      • Percussion Sticks, Mallets and Beaters will be wiped down before/after every use in class.

  • There will be NO sharing of instruments or accessories at any time.

      • Valve Oil

      • Slide Oil

      • Reeds

      • Neck straps

      • Mutes

  • Traffic plan will be utilized for both the band room and instrumental storage room (known as The Cage). There will be entrance only doors and exit only doors for both.

  • The cage will be utilized only for instruments stored during in person cohorts. ALL instruments must be transported to and from school with the exception of Tuba and Percussion. Flutes and Clarinets must be carried with the student while in school at all times. (This is to limit need for access and numbers of students in the cage).

  • Instruments stored in the cage MUST be labeled clearly to be read from a distance without touching the instrument.

  • Students will be reminded and encouraged to wash and/or sanitize their hands upon entering and leaving the band room.
