Several of our units are based on reading skills, either through book clubs or independent reading as part of the curriculum. This means there will be a high volume of reading overall, and lots of discussion with classmates. To help you with your selections, please feel free to access my "Virtual Classroom Library" linked above, as well as the NP Media Center.
Our wonderful media specialist, Mrs. Nagle, will come in to talk to students about using Sora, the app dedicated specifically for accessing the huge database of eBooks we have been cultivating. So the good news is that even though you'll be reading quite a bit you will get some choice in what you read, and the majority of books are taken from popular YA fiction.
The units this year have a strong emphasis on the process of writing, as well as the development of theme and the ability to support a thesis statement that connects to that theme. The following is a general list of some major units we will be covering:
- Short Stories: including fictional elements, literary devices, author's craft
- Writing Realistic Fiction: focus on narrative writing and inclusion of details
- Drama: stage directions, dialogue, and themes
- The Novel: whole class discussion, annotating skills, characterization
- Writing About Reading: learning about different pieces of fiction, detailed annotations, written responses to fiction
- Argument: constructing a strong claim, backing up with evidence, learning to cite sources with works cited page
- Book Clubs: working with groups to analyze themes, improve on discussion techniques
- Nonfiction: examining the different aspects of nonfiction novels
- Poetry: extracting themes and literary devices from poems, creative writing
