FRENCH LEVEL THREE
PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
Attendance: A student enrolled in this course is expected to be present at least 90% of the days the class is in session.
Achievement:
• A student must maintain a D-or better average for the four marking periods and the midterm and final examinations.
• Marking period grades will be determined by test, participation, class-work and assignments based on the objectives of this course.
• The student must devote approximately one half hour of study at home for each session. The student must participate in class using the foreign language.
OBJECTIVES The basic objective of learning a world language is to learn to communicate, i.e. to transmit information effectively through speech, writing, gestures, behavior, or a combination of these.
After completing French 3 students will be able to:
• comprehend simple spoken and written French
• communicate orally in basic everyday situations
• write coherently on a limited range of subjects
• use technology to acquire current cultural information
In order to develop these skills, students will use a variety of resources and technologies and will focus on the four basic skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, they will develop an understanding of the interrelationship between culture and language.
Listening: Students will
I. Comprehend directions, questions, statements, short conversation, and narratives in the present and simple j Jast on familiar topics and everyday situations.
1 Demonstrate understanding of messages, conversations, and narratives that contain some unfamiliar material.
2 Comprehend some familiar elements--phrases, idiomatic expressions, information etc. -in material produced for native speakers and other material spoken at a normal rate of speech.
Speaking: Students will
I. Describe people, places, things, and events with some details using present and past tenses.
1 Generate and respond to short messages such as invitations, directions, announcements and appointments
2 Express details of their everyday lives and of past experience
3 Organize thoughts into coherent oral speech.
4 Communicate and interact with appropriate responses in limited social settings and basic situations. . .
Reading: Students will
I. Understand print material containing learned structures and vocabulary.
2. Develop additional reading strategies (e.g. contextual clues, cognates, inference) to aid in understanding unfamiliar passages.
Writing: Students wiII
I. Express themselves in simple paragraphs in logical sequence using the present and past tenses.
2. Create simple dialogues focusing on everyday situations.
Culture: Students will
I. Recognize culturally appropriate social behaviors in everyday life situations.
1 Expand their knowledge of the contributions of the French culture to other world cultures.
2 Increase their knowledge of the francophone world.
