FRENCH LEVEL TWO
PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENTS
Attendance:
A student enrolled in this course is expected to be present at least 90% of the days the class is in session.
Achievement:
• A student must maintain a D-or better average for the four marking periods and the midterm and final examinations.
• Marking period grades will be determined by test, participation, class-work and assignments based on the objectives of this course.
• The student must devote approximately one half hour of study at home for each session. The student must participate in class using the foreign language.
OBJECTIVES
The basic objective of learning a world language is to learn to communicate, i.e. to transmit information effectively through speech, writing, gestures, behavior, or a combination of these.
After completing French 2 students will be able to:
• comprehend simple spoken and written French
• communicate orally in basic everyday situations
• write short paragraphs on a limited range of subjects
• compare and contrast basic cultural elements of the French-speaking world with our own
In order to develop these skills, students will use a variety of resources and technologies and will focus on the four basic skill areas: listening, speaking, reading and writing. In addition, they will develop an understanding of the interrelationship between culture and language.
Listening: Students will
I. Comprehend directions, questions, statements, and short conversations in the present tense on familiar topics and everyday situations:
1 Demonstrate understanding of messages, conversations, and narratives that contain some unfamiliar material.
2 Comprehend some familiar elements--phrases, idiomatic expressions, information etc. -in material produced for native speakers and other material spoken at a normal rate of speech.
Speaking: Students will
I. Provide and obtain information on familiar topics.
1 Describe people, places, things, and events with some details.
2 Interact with appropriate responses in limited social settings and basic situations.
3 Express likes, dislikes, and preferences.
4 Express details of their everyday lives using present and simple past tenses.
Reading: Students will
1 Understand simple print material containing learned structures and vocabulary.
2 Develop basic reading strategies (e.g. contextual clues, cognates, inference) to aid in understanding unfamiliar material such as authentic simple advertisements, transportation schedules, reviews, and horoscopes.
Writing: Students will
I. Describe familiar people, places, things and events in the present tense using complete sentences.
1 Respond to situational dialogues focusing on familiar topics and situations.
2 Create short paragraphs on familiar topics
Culture: Students will
I. Recognize culturally appropriate social behaviors in everyday life situations.
1 Understand the role of stereotyping in forming and sustaining prejudice.
2 Increase their awareness of the cultural variety within the francophone world.
