Literacy Curriculum
We use Wonders 2020 as our ELA curriculum resource. Teachers employ a balanced literacy approach to promote complete literacy development among students. Students receive direct instruction for phonics and word study, phonemic awareness, reading and writing.
Students at Northbridge Elementary School will:
Participate in class discussions (Raise hand, listen to others, speak one at a time, wait turns).
Show understanding of a simple story by retelling, giving opinions, answering questions, or acting out the story.
Know and explain the difference between fact and fiction.
Demonstrate understanding of: front and back of a book, where writing starts, one to one correspondence, return sweep (left to right progression), spaces between words, how many letters are in a word, difference between a word and a letter.
Apply phonemic awareness skills by: producing and recognizing rhyming words, using drawings or phonetic spelling to express an idea, produce and recognize consonant and vowel sounds.
Write their first and last name using upper/lowercase letters and appropriate letter formation and size.
Recognize and write Uppercase and Lowercase letters.
Read some common high-frequency words by sight (ex: a, the, I, color, and words).
Distinguish beginning and ending sounds.
Use letter sound matches to decode simple three and four-letter words.
Learn a viery of poems, songs, rhymes and chants.
Identify and describe the difference between author and illustrator.
Identify beginning, middle, and end of a story.
