We are looking for community input as we build our courses, classes and programs for adult learners.  Please take time to complete this survey.

Adult Education Community Survey

According to the United States Census only 75.3% of all Newark, NJ residents over the age of 25 possess a high school diploma.  A high school diploma is a standard requirement for many jobs—and serves as a necessity for entrance into higher education. Without these possibilities, the life of a Newark resident will likely be limited.  Additionally, the current economic renaissance happening in our city opens possibilities for those who possess at least a high school diploma. While a good education is the key to ensuring that Newark residents are prepared to meet the demands of the City's revitalization, even more pressing is the fact that one third of the jobs in the city require a bachelor’s degree or training beyond a high school degree. (NCLC 2019)

Dropping out of high school is linked to a variety of negative health impacts such as: limited employment prospects, low wages, poverty and decreased life expectancy. The Office of Adult Education serves as Newark Public Schools’ lead support for undereducated adults in the city. We are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of Newark and its residents.  Our goal is to offer programs and pathways for adults to attain a GED, participate in Adult Basic Education, learn to speak, read, and write English, participate in educational experiences in the skilled trades, participate in apprenticeships, and take college preparation classes—to name just some of the opportunities that will help city adults become better educated and credentialed.
